Pirates getting a makeover with new characters

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

Disney will make changes this spring to the Pirates of The Caribbean rides at both Magic Kingdom and Disneyland -- adding characters from the Pirates of the Caribbean movies and updating some of the special effects. The rides will close starting in March and reopen near the release of the movie sequel this summer.

No. :( I have a bad feeling about this. Granted it needed a refurb, but this could go the wrong direction.

Crap, betcha it will be closed already when I come out for Solace. My favorite ride at Disneyland, hands down. Oh, well :)

An unofficial fansite lists Disneyland's ride as closed March 6 thru June 16.

I hope they keep the part after the big ship, where the shadows are fighting. My favorite part is when the guy throws a chair on the other guy.

I'm a little worried about this too. That ride is great (best or second best ride in the park). While I'm sure the changes will make it look great, I hope it doesn't lose to much.

Interesting how things come full circle..

..in the movie, they took scenes from the ride (i.e. the dog with the keys). Now that it's popular, they want to refurb the ride so it looks more like the movie.. all I have to say is they better keep the dog with the keys! :)

Aw man! I'll agree that some refurbishments would be okay, but I always thought what made Disney so spectacular was it's nostalgia. I hope there isn't a Johnny Depp character in it! Don't lose Walt's personal touch.

Very interesting stuff there. Thanks Jeff.

As long as Eddie Murphy never appears in the Haunted Mansion or Steve Guttenberg shows up in the Tower of Terror, I'm happy.

I still think there are some scenes in the movie that would have been improved with the addition of a strategically placed big green EXIT sign. :)

"...I always thought what made Disney so spectacular was it's nostalgia."

Maybe so, however Walt went on record as saying he never intended Disneyland to be a museum. He envisioned a park that was ever-changing, introducing new attractions, removing outdated ones, and revamping existing attractions with the newest and best technology.

I have a feeling he would wholeheartedly approve of this. And is it asking too much to wait and see how it's done before b!tching? ;)

I agree Rideman. That movie was so bland that by the time it was over I had planned on what colors I was going to paint my living room and what I needed to pick up from the grocery store on the way home. You couldn't pay me to see the sequel.

It's too bad that they couldn't increase the size of the Florida version to mirror Disneyland's - it is so much better.

And if you really are so concerned about nostalga, they've still got Carousel of Progress...

Hasanyone seen the Paris Version of the ride? It's the best of the bunch. They have a pair of the most expensive and advanced audio-animatronic people ever, and they're having a sword fight. It's mind blowing.

SPOILERS:

The Paris one has its scenes reversed! You start with the Blue Lagoon scene, then up a lift hill. Then, an added scene, where pirates attack a fortress from a sinking ship... The animatronics are awesome. Then, the prison scene and the drop into the village part... When you reach the flaming village, you drop another time with a boom effect (smoke and lights). You then end with the caves when you see the Pirates as skeletons.

Regarding the sword fight... in 2001, the sword fight sequence wasn't timed too right unfortunately.*** This post was edited by Absimilliard 2/4/2006 1:08:21 PM ***

Not only is the DLP's PotC better but so is that park's Space Mtn and Big Thunder!

I read in the recent book written about Pirates (A Killer book for any DL/WDW fan) that the fighting pirates came back after being taken out for 18 months. Their timing was off and they damaged each other!*** This post was edited by Peabody 2/4/2006 2:40:59 PM ***

These movies are becoming too big, didn't Disney say that Pirates would be left the way it is so as to remember Walt?*** This post was edited by Fronin 2/5/2006 7:40:36 PM ***
