Crystal Beach Cyclone

Hey, i was thinking. most of us have seen the notorious crystal beach cyclone. how many of us would have the guts to actually ride it. I think that i would. It looks insane, but it is dangerous. that isn't good. but it looks so cool, i wonder if i would really do it. if you haven't seen it you can go to www.badnitrus.danimation.com and there is a 3d model of it.

Yeah, i agree if it was safer because it was breaking people's ribs. Those turns look crazy. I wonder how many people got hurt.

The Comet was built with materials salvaged from the Cyclone. That's all that the two coasters have in common. The Cyclone was probably one of the most vicious twisters ever built. The Comet is a classic double out and back with great air time. Would I have ridden the CB Cyclone? Yes!

I'd ride it in a heartbeat. When I have the money saved up, I'm going to call up good old Mike Boodley and GCI and have them rebuild it in my back yard. If anyone could do it, it's him. (I'm not kidding! Sure I have to pay for things like house and kids first :), but if folks like Dennis Tito can blow $20 mil on an 8 day trip to space, why can't I blow some $$ on a coaster?)

Rib cracking on coasters still happens today. Last year I visited Kennywood before a family wedding in PA, anyway, my dad (age 60) hopped in the back row, left seat of the Thunderbolt (his favorite), and during a particularly speedy ride with hands up, he smashed his rib on the first time through the turn near the Potato Patch. (Funny thing is he made me promise not to tell my mom, because he still wanted to ride Exterminator and SP a few more times!)

Actually if you notice, the crystal beach cyclone may actualy be a good ride. and in no way do i see the comet being half the ride the cyclone was.

only if the restraints were comfortable cause I heard people had serious injuries after riding that coaster.

I think the Cyclone was safer than people think. There were tons of people that rode it and were'nt harmed. I bet the ride was smoother and more comfortable than a Vekoma coaster.

I would take a spin on the Cyclone in a heartbeat, if given the opportunity. I am sure that it was a thrilling ride, perhaps moreso than anything in existance today, but I have a feeling that tales of the ride have become more exaggerated over the years, making the ride out to be more of a monster than it really was. Don't forget, the Cyclone was built just a few years after figure-eight (Leap The Dips-style) coasters fell out of favor to more thrilling Schmeck/Miller/Prior & Church designs, so perhaps the Cyclone was terrifying to those who had only experienced small, side-friction coasters up until that point! Maybe the Cyclone riders who touted it as being the scariest thing ever had grown up on the Crystal Beach Giant Coaster!

Still, I would love the opportunity to see if it really was everything that people made it out to be!

The Cyclone can be considered the first thrill coaster IMO. After what you sair , Rob, with the side friction ones.

It was open 20 years and opened the same year as the Coney Island Cyclone. So they could have ridden other thrill coasters

I just learned that my grandma rode this monster! I can't wait to talk to her about it! I think this thing could be wicked if rebuilt in steel, although CCCI or GCI could probably do a wicked job recreating it!

Coasters- a little slice of heaven

It got so bad after it aged that there was more people watching it than actually riding. I would love to ride it even though it was so dangerous. Bones will heal but the memory would last a lifetime.
