2001 the year of the California roller coaster
I think that a coastrer company should totally do that. re-create it and make it safer. that would be incredible.

Well the need a park to want it first. Coaster companys don't build them for the heck of it, they build them for money.

Did you know that there was a nurse on duty the whole time this ride was open? People came off with nose bleeds, broken collar bones, crushed rib cages.... It could be dangerous to ride..... Oh Yeah, Bring It On....

Uh oh...
let me guess, we're about to go over a drop.
yup
80 degree angle?
most likely.
Bring it on.

It seems like I remember the CBC as having been built with steel supports. I guess it's still technically a wooden coaster, though, because of the track.

I think most of the injuries were due to the restraints and bench seats, with people slamming into each other on the turns.

The fact that there were so few injuries makes we think that it would not be that dangerous given proper seats.

I read one place that the nurse on duty was there more for publicity than for real threats, but another source said it was a requirement of the insurance company. I tend to believe the former.

Regardless of it's danger potential, I'd sure get on it in a heartbeat.
I think that the Crystal Beach Cyclone could be re-built today and not cause injury. However, parks stray away from rollercoasters if there is even a slight chance of it being uncomfortable. Case in point - Drachen Fire. They can't run the risk of people taking legal action for minor injuries, as is often the case.

Just in case any of you don't know, the Crystal Beach Cyclone is actually The Comet at the Great Escape, and before that it was The Comet at Crystal Beach. The cyclone was not removed completely, but was majorly re-tracked and changed from a twister to an out & Back.

The Cyclone was completely dismantled and the materials from it were used to build the Comet. The Comet did not sit on the exact location of the Cyclone. It was oriented more along the lake front. Get a hold of a copy of "Harry Traver-Legends of Terror" by Richard Munch. It will give you a much better insight to both rides.
I was just watching a Discovery Channel show about it, they must have it wrong!

Would Knobel's be a good park for a Crystal Beach Cyclone from GCI?

It's not unusal for these programs to get some of facts mixed up. The writers either misunderstand, or take some "artistic license" with it because it sounds better. *** This post was edited by Dutchman on 5/27/2001. ***
I would really think twice about doing it. I would love to see a modern version of the coaster designed with safety in mind. It looks like an incredible experience.
