Seen Anything Unsafe?
Have you seen anything that was unsafe about rides and/or staff at a park you have visited?
At PKD I have seen two things that upset me.
1) On the Hurler they never came to the back and checked my lap-bar, and considering the airtime it gives I could've been dead
2) They ran a train full of people on Shockwave during a t-storm. The lighting had been going on for a while.

On Titan an SFOT they dont even check your lap restrant. they always seem to be rushing to get some and they dont even pull onthe bar to check and make sure it locked, they just tap it from the top of it. I know they have to go fast,but I have never seen workers go this fast before,they dont onany other rides except Shockwave.

Yeah, once at MA, a ride op was checking arestraint and the other op dispatched the train while the ride op was sort of working inside the train. Only minor. I felt really unsafe when my father stopped Adventure Express at PKI to make sure he properly stored his hat. Ug.

Pier Rides in Ocean City MD. They have a Pinfari looping coaster called "Looping Star". Although it is a permanent ride, the supports are placed on top of piles of loose wooden blocks!

I found a LOT of things that I found unsafe at Six Flags Darien Lake which is kind of alerting...
1) I noticed that the so-called security there is either under 18 or over 81yrs old! Kind of makes you think that you can get away with whatever you want.
2) The ride-ops do not pay attention enough while the ride is in operation to ensure the full & complete safety of the guests. Example: On the Lasso (swings), there was this fat 9yr old kid who twisted his swing some 10 times around and around. The ride op gave her sphiel (mentioning to NOT twist the swing) while the kid was right in front of her... SHE DIDN'T NOTICE, and the ride started.
3) On the same note... I noticed some people throw certain objects from the ride as it is in motion, and the ride-ops either didn't notice them, or just gave them a mild warning that they don't mind as long as security doesn't see it.
4) There are too many workers under 16 there that just don't know jack!
5) I have to applaud this one, however... Something happened on the Giant Wheel... I guess some kids started spitting from the top... the wheel was in motion for the actual ride, it slowed down, stopped & they kicked the 4 kids off of the ride and then proceeded to continue with the ride.
They can catch SOME things some of the time!
6) On coasters, they push the restraints (Horse Collars or Lap Bars) too tight when checking each passenger in each car... making the ride very uncomfortable. (I have found a way around that... just give you hand a buffer zone by placing it under the restraint).
Six Flags employees seriously need the training and hiring expertese as Cedar Fair employees as I have definately noticed a difference!!

A few years back at the then-Geauga Lake, we were going on the Double Loop (is that what it's called?) and there was a tiny girl in line, I don't know if she met the height requirement or not, but no one checked her, and when she was on the ride she was sitting cross-legged (indian style) on the seat with her harness down and no one told her to sit correctly -- I don't know what could have happened to her if something had happened. I was overall not impressed with the employees' concern about safety then, but I will remind everyone that this was a few years back, around '97 I believe.

I can't be certain who posted it 'cause this client formats the page funny, but wrt. the Looping Star blocking: Loose wood blocks is the correct way to do it. On the other hand, if you see a ride sitting on cinder block, I suggest you run like hell.

Not physically checking lap bars, for instance, isn't necessarily unsafe; merely incorrect. Besides which, do you not always check your own anyway??
You want unsafe? Let's talk about the operator who decided to start a Giant Gondola Ferris Wheel rotating while passengers were exiting the ride, for instance. Or the operator who waited until the train was entering the station before deciding to leap across the track. Or the operator who decided to cross in front of a Sky Ride gondola that was sitting, ready to go, in the automatic tripper. Or the entirely untextured concrete one park used on its midway that is slicker than ceramic tile or diamond plate when it is wet.....

I don't know if this counts, but a "carnival" that was in my area in Columbus, Ohio a couple of weeks ago had a "Skydiver" Ferris Wheel that had an anchor cable on one side was not attached to the ground but attached to a forklift-like machine called a bobcat. I'm not sure this is safe but it looked frightening. Don't know, maybe it was OK. What do you think?
I think I wouldn't be riding anyway! Yikes.

coasterforce, of course it was unsafe! It was a carnival! I refuse to even go on carnival lady bug rides, I'm so terrified of every carny ride and operators! I stay away from them at all costs. When I'm going past one, I'm scared that something might colapse and shoot shrapnel at me. Too many "accidents" have resulted in deaths at carnivals.

Geuaga Lake last year... trains flying through the station of Raging Wolf Kabobs due to unset brakes (and ride ops not paying attention), ride ops napping between cycles on the boomerang and 36-inch kids riding Big Dipper. A member of this very site reported these incidents to the state and weeks later, they were fined for a number of things.
Did I mention flying cell phones, super-sucking water pumps and floorless floors opening up from under you?

I'm scared to death of carnival rides! I've been stuck on a Zipper for about 20 minutes which made me a little nervous. Also while riding an Orbiter, which is basically a sideways scrambler, my "lap bar" (I call it that because it wasn't really a lap bar, it just went across the top of the gondola) popped open just as the ride was starting. I called to the ride op and got him to stop the rides so I could secure it again. Needless to say, I didn't feel very secure after that.
