Xcelerator goes vertical at Knott's Berry Farm

janfredrick: The LIMs will be located on a long horizontal piece of track. That is where the 0-80 mph acceleration will take place.

Nate - there are no LIMs on Xcellerator, and that piece of track that was placed *IS* launch track.

There are no LIMs on that track for the acceleration. It's all done using a hydraulic launching system that powers a cable pulley/pusher thingy that actually launches the train.

The launch system is somewhat similar to the Schwarztkopf shuttle loops, but instead of using a flywheel, or a counterweight, it uses hydraulic accumulators. They are filled with hydraulic fluid and pressurized to something like sixteen thousand psi. The fluid is released into the motors which spin the winch, pulling the launching shuttle like on Monty.

Dutchman pretty much has it... the total force used is equal to just over 8,700 horsepower. I should also mention that there was some question as to where the launch would start... it starts in the station. No roll out to engage the system.

When I looked at the launch drive sitting on the trailer in the emp. parking lot, I was truely amazed at it's compactness. It is considerably smaller than the drive on Monty, even taking into consideration the hydraulic fluid cooling unit.

I was just looking at the last picture in the WestCoaster update. Anyone know what those cylinders inside the launch track are for??
