A GOOD name has draw power and marketing potential.

A good name with a lousy marketing plan won't draw people to the park. A bad name with a good marketing plan will. Heck, any marketing team worth a dime can draw people to a park with NO new attraction to market.

Not denying that, but "Flight Deck" wasn't to be used to market a new ride or to draw people to the park. Once the attraction itself is established, the name is essential to one big thing: retail.

Perhaps a great new coaster named "Flight Deck" could draw people to a park, but an old coaster renamed from the marketable "Top Gun" to the less than stellar "Flight Deck" isn't going to sell t-shirts, shot glasses, and a bunch of other items with a 300% markup.

I'm willing to wager my money that it was the retail/merchandising department that put the kibosh on the name, and not any enthusiast complaining.

Jeff said:I know right? I mean, in RCT, it's like, Wooden Roller Coaster 1 and Looping Coaster 2.

But do your RCT peeps walk around town with RCT1 shirts on? :)

If you check the Great America Page on it. It's been changed back to Flight Deck.

Dumb.

Chuck, who'll just call it inverted coaster

I think my point is getting lost in translation here.

First, I dont really see what is so tragically bad about the name Flight Deck anyway, but that is beside the point.

1. You have a company that inherits a park with names they cannot use any longer.

2. In this case, you have an old coaster that is probably gone within a decade that has previously been themed (although that theme has now gone the way of disaster transport...no wonder cedar fair wanted Kings Island) as "Top Gun".

3. You need a name for coaster that no one really cares about in regards to marketing, etc..nor will they.

4. You come to the conclusion that it really doesnt matter what you name it. As long as it isnt "Suspended Coaster One"...who really gives a hoot?

5. You pick Flight Deck. Unimpressive and unassuming...but sort of generic. Just like the ride!

It worked with Firehawk, but with an outdated coaster like Top Gun, Youre not going to be able to create some intensive crazy marketing campaign...and even if they wanted to, who's to say it wouldn't work with Flight Deck?

Your point was, "Because no one does [care]. Except here." That didn't seem to require any translation. :)

Thank you for your interest in California's Great America. The name change from Flight Deck to Afterburn on our web site was a mishaps by our web designer. The ride name Afterburn is the new name for Carowinds ' Top Gun. At all the other Top Gun parks the name will be changing to Flight Deck. We hope this information helps you and we hope to entertain you in near future.

Sincerely,

California's Great America

Either this is the best practical joke ever, or Cedar Fair has hired trained dolphins to select names for the rides based on a variety of nouns and verbs scrawled on different geometric shapes placed in their tank.

I can't wait to buy an "Inverted Coaster 1" T-Shirt. From "T-Shirt Kiosk 1."

At least they haven't yoinked Drop Tower and moved it to CP, it is clearly better than the S&S towers they have.

Why would they do something expensive and stupid like that anyway?

At least reuse dominator or power tower a few more times...or detonator or denominator or numerator or dropinator.

Drop tower? Thank you for stating the obvious.

I can't wait to hear enthusiasses getting pissy when they overhear a GP say, 'Let's go on the Drop Tower!'

I mean, it's called 'Drop Tower'...there's no "the" in front of it!

In this case, both would be correct. Its name is "Drop Tower" and since that's also the description of the ride, it's also "the drop tower" at this park. (As long as you don't capitalize 'drop' and 'tower' after stating 'the,' of course.)

I can't wait to buy me a drop tower shirt. I can see it now. Plain white Hanes t-shirt with iron on black block lettering.

Drop Tower... Wow, that's bad... but in this case, they could have just done like Lotte World (in south korea) and name their gyro drop... "Gyro Drop"! Lotte World also named their Intamin Gyro Swing (smaller giant frisbee) the "Gyro Swing"...
