Knex-LIM
My friend and I are trying to make Superman the Escape out of Knex for our science class. I was wondering if any of you know how I can make some sort of miniature LIM or LSM. I know that LIM's are made from squirrel cage motors, but I was at a site and they look huge and expensive
If you can think of any other way that we could luanch our train up ( other than rubberbands) it would help a lot.

This may work but is there a way you can attach a magnet to the train and then have it repelled by another magnet pulled on a chain under the track that way it is similar to LIM in not been toulched and use of magents.
A more complicated way is to send electricity down one rail of the track and back on the other rail. The car joins the two ad there are pernament magnets completely below the track and one in the car itself. This replicated a LIM system but is complicted and you may end up doing whghat Intamin did and spend a year perfecting it to make it work!

Im the friend working on the Knex mock up of S:TE with joey. I agree that rubber bands will not work. I have tried times before making a S&S tower and they do not propell the cars far enough. I was thinking that either compressed air or bar magnets would work but would be hard to do. I will tell you when we finish this if the LIM's worked or not. Then we will try to look for your suggestions and try to use those.

Use a fly wheel system. Since your structure is about nine feet tall you can drop a weight (heavier than the car) from that height. The weight is attached to a string and a few pulleys that somehow connects it to the car (that is up to you). The string should remain attached to the train until it goes up the hill. That would probably be the hardest part is to detach it from the train. I can visualize it in my mind. Hopefully you can too. But hopefully the weight will generate enough energy to get the train somewhere near the height you want. Probably sounds easier than it really is. You could even get a mechanism to get the train connected to the lift again. It's just an idea and I might ticker with it once I finish my faller model. Also try one of the model forums for example (http://www.coastershop.com/). They might be more help then coasterbuzz. Best of luck.

You could make it air-powered. Have a length of PVC tubing under the launch track. Cut a slot out of the top (Just run the tube over a circular saw sticking out half an inch or similar). Make a piston (You find something - a cap off a can?) & attach a piece of plywood that will stick out of the slot. The plywood will push the car down the track. At the beginning, attach a vacuum cleaner set to reverse. Viola! If you want serious power, attach a compressor, pump air in 'till it's full & WHAAM! The car will smash through the ceiling. If you lose too much air through the slot, perhaps glue on a strip of rubber on either side to keep it in.
No, I haven't tried it. Been meaning to do so with LEGO instead of K'NEX. It should work.
With rubber bands, loop up a whole bunch into one loooong band. See if that works. Me and my buddy did that with a big packet & attached a paper plane to it. Stretched it over 300ft & it cleared the distance in like a COUPLE of seconds! That's 100mph!

Or, you could do it my way...plain and simple.
Find a piece of flat, thin wood, like balsa, some Crazy Glue, two hammers, two roofing nails (any size), and a box of Co2 air gun cartrdges.
1. Glue the wood to the "floor" of the coaster car.
2. Glue two (2) Co2 cartridges, one on each side -left and right - of the wood, with the thinnest, puncturable part facing out of two holes in the back of the car.
3. Have one person on each side hit a nail into the back of each Co2 cartridge at the same time.
The End :).
(Don't worry about the Co2 cartridge exploding. I've performed this plenty of times(not a coaster model, but you get the drift), and it's never blown up on me)

Yeah, I was thinking some of my CO2 cartridges from my paintball gun. I really like coastergods idea, I think I'm going to attempt both of them. Im doing the project for extra credit and cuz well its fun. My science class is focusiong on coasters all this month, heaven on earth...lol.

Just a quick check-up here, the "standard" knex coaster has no up-stop wheel. I hope you already have something that will keep the car on the track.

The CO2 will push the car until the curve of the track disengages the CO2 from the car. The CO2 will continue out the end of the pipe, into a sturdy box, which will allow the car to travel up the tower.

Yeah Intamin2k is right. In tech class we made CO2 powered cars. All you have to do is attatch the cartrige to the back and find a way to pop the pin, and i swear these things went like 75 mph down the school's hallway. They were incredible. The only flaw is that it might be too fast, unless the train/car is heavy. And finding a way to put a hole in the back. We had this thing that you put the back of the car up to a hole in the wood, (standing upright) then you would press a button and the metal thing with a pin on the front would fly down and put a hole in the back of the co2 and it you seriously fly away. if u could do that and then get it out of the way, it would work

The track were using look like pipeline track in a way (on top and bottom of the wheel). So theres pretty much no way the train will fly off the track. Im gonna build some sort of brake at the top (probobly just a knex piece for it to run into).
SO anybody have a site where they could put a picture of one of these things. I have an idea of what you all are saying but it would help a lot if i could see it with my own eyes.

Well, usually you just don't go do a project on a roller coaster. You can watch a video and see that. I'm sure Joey is doing a project on acceleration or something. Is what I needed to know is if it was a specific type of device to accelerate.
