Taking an Open Seat

Say, you were in the back row of a coaster. You are walking up and you see an open seat. The gates are closed, so sit in it, and get an extra ride. Who does it? Is it line jumping? Is it wrong? I do not skip people in line, i do think that is wrong. But this i think is not, and i was wondering what everybody else thinks.

Ahh... bringing up a closed argument/discussion from the "Have you HONESTLY ever cut in line? " topic is closed.

Is it that we need to discuss the morals of this dilemma, or that you want to try and state your side that it wasn't 'line cutting' but just snagging an extra ride?

Either way, I'll stay neutral...
I just had to state that I think this is a partial continuation of the thread that got closed!!

I think you should be able to do this. But @ SFGAm, I have gotten talked to a few times for doing this. :(

I know this, but i was bashed for what i thought and it was my fault that the forum was closed. The people who were bashing me thought that i was saying that it is ok to cut the line. I wanted to clear this and see if people think that it is ok to take an extra ride.

If I'm understanding you correctly as you are exiting the coaster you see an empty seat and fill it in. You haven't linejumped, but you are committing a sin just as bad. The only way I would find this acceptable if there was no one else waiting in line, otherwise you should exit the station and get back in line with the rest of us:)

Its like eating seconds before other's have gotten to eat.

I've been threatened to be kicked out..... (says under breath) many times (not nescessarily for this reason. And I seriously am not proud of it. One op on the American Eagle said 'If you do this again, I will be forced to escort you from the park'. THat kind of scared me. PS: Getting kicked out of a park is not fun.... and it doesn't give you a great feeling. :(

I am thinking that this thread's lifespan is going to be very short. So I'll try to make my point. What is line jumping? Getting a ride on a rollercoaster without waiting. Does having a single person get in front of you in line really change anything? No, but think of what would happen if everyone thought this way. That wouldn't be too great would it. But people do not do it because it's against the rules. Waiting to get an extra seat after you get off is essentially the same thing. You are getting an ride without waiting. I am sure everyone who gets off a ride they just waited for it would want to go again, but they don't because it is against the rules. Why else do you think hardly anyone is there jumping into extra seats too. If you love coasters that much then you will be willing to go back and wait again. If you absolutely have to ride again after you get off, wait around at the exit until there is an extra seat, and when the ride ops call out that they need a single rider and can't find one, voulanteer yourself and they'll prolly let you on. I have seen people do this a few times, though I have never done it myself.

Neil, like I said to you on AIM, taking an empty seat after you have ridden is okay when the ride op says it is. If it is official park policy to reride an empty seat, it's okay to do so. If, however, the park says only one ride per wait in line, then reriding again is not okay.

If nobody is there waiting on the other side to get on the ride, most ride ops will say, over the PA, that you can stay on. If there is any line at all, they don't. Why do you think that is? Hmm...maybe because there might be a solo rider who HASN'T ridden yet and could use that "empty" seat you want to filch!

I've heard this called line-jumping. I see nothing at all wrong with it; in fact, some parks encourage it (BGT, for example). I always wait until the gates on the other side close and thus nobody can get through to take the seat. If there's a full row waiting and I snag a seat that's obviously wrong and I'll get caught. But if there's open seats, why not stay on. Six Flags is the only chain I know of that doesn't allow it.

We do it all the time @ PKD. We do not get in trouble for it either!

I don't see anything wrong with it myself. If the ops let you then its good. Some ops will let you, some won't. The ones who have worked there for a while usually will let you do it, then there's the new ops (its bad on opening day) who are tight on all the rules.

The answer is it depends on the park and the circumstances.

There are a fair number of parks that allow riders to remain seated for a second ride if and only if there is nobody waiting for that seat. There are still other parks that will allow you to ride again if and only if there are no riders in line to board. Then there are parks where you could be the only person within eyesight of the coaster platform, and they would still make you walk all the way around.

It's a matter of the individual park's policy, and my own take on it is, "If I am offered a re-ride, you don't have to ask me twice, I'll keep my butt planted"


Then there is the Coney Island Cyclone which could have a 4 hour long wait, and if your wallet holds out you can reride as long as you want. ($3 per reride, when I rode it, I took 2 or 3 re-rides) (Of course if you are in a choice seat, I'd be worried about facing the crowd of disgruntled riders at the bottom of the exit ramp)

To reinterate, if the ride op says it is ok to ride again, then you should ride again. Originally Neil H. was giving a whole process as to how to sneak on for a second ride without getting caught. That is something you should not do. But like I said, if there is no one at all in line or if the ride op says it is ok, then i have no problem with it.

If there is an empty seat and the gates have closed, I will make an attempt to get another ride. Most ride-ops are willing, although some won't let you no matter what. I was at Hershey last summer riding SDL and there was NO ONE in line and they kept making us walk around. This is just stupid, I mean come on...it's not like we were stopping anyone from riding. Anyway, that is a different case...if I'm a single I'll try to ride again if possible.

I am a supervisor at Lake Compounce and we don't not allow double rides on any occasion except for handicap guests and special ERT's

If I'm riding say, Nitro, in the backseat...after returning to the station, the lapbars are released and we all head towards the exit.

Now, as I head towards the exit, I turn and glance at row 5, three people are riding. I back off and watch as the operator calls for a single rider...

No replies.

The operators give the 'OK' and the restraints are locked. I hop in row 5. Am I wrong in doing so?
I don't think so, and personally, have yet to be heckled for doing that at various parks I have been to.

I mean really, doesn't it look better sending out full trains than trains with say, 3-5 seats empty EVERY ride? What's wrong with increasing your throughput? On Medusa, especially during opening year, we always let exiting riders stay on or hang around the exit...there were always spare seats and for the waiting GP, full trains = capacity.
