Death of the white woodies?

Do yous guys & girls think that the classic white woodie has finally sucumbed?

I don't totally understand why they don't paint woodies white anymore. Could it be because the rides are really tough to paint and it saves on maintenance? I know I would hate to have to paint a coaster with all those beams and supports.

Hoosier Hurricane is painted white. My guess is it takes to long to paint them and probably costs more, and takes longer. So parks don't worry about it and try to get them up fast.

Parks For 2001: PKD, BGW, Funtown USA

The Wild One is painted white, and it's not especcially exciting (compared to the other rides at SFA, it's more exciting compared to other coasters at different parks, just becuase it's at SFA).

With the white supports, it raises maintenace cost, and such. Also, the white paint starts to look craptastic after a while if it's not properly maintained. Yes they do look cool though.

I like parks with multiple woodies where some are painted and others aren't. Hershey painted the Comet white but left Wildcat and Lightning Racer "natural". Kennywood has 2 white woodies and one painted red or stained red.

I'm sure it costs parks a ton of money to keep painting woodies. I know that many years ago, before treated lumber, the paint was used to protect the wood, but now that method is no longer necessary, so the only advantage to paint would be for aesthetics.

I personnally like the way white wooden coasters look, but like Rob said above it costs tons of money to paint a rollercoaster. Plus in order to keep it looking good you have to almost repaint every offseaon (if the park has one). I think in these days it is more of a way to save money. Plus many people like the look of natural wood much better than white or some other color.

Thanks to treated lumber, no need to paint them anymore.

All of the painted ones are older, before the use of treated lumber.

As long as the older ones remain standing, you will see painted coasters... unless it is just because a park wants to paint one.

Personally, while I do like the natural wood look and also the "white" look, I believe my favorite is the "army green" look of Knoebels Pheonix. I also have some old photos from my grand parents of Hersheypark's Comet when it was painted dark green. There was just something ominous about that paint job.

The Betrand Island Wildcat was a dark green color, I believe, but unlike the Phoenix, it was painted and not stained.

There are some new white woodies... someone mentioned the Hoosier Hurricane at Indiana Beach, and the Dutch Wonderland Sky Princess (1992) has always been painted white.

Geauga Lake/SFWoA's Big Dipper used to be white until they rebuilt it in the mid-80's. It has remained unpainted since, until last year when they painted the track red (don't know why).

One good example of why woodies aren't painted white anymore is Raging Wolf Bobs prior to the Six Flags conversion - very nasty. Had to make it look good in 2000 since BKF was next to it.

Rolling Thunder at SFgadv is white and everyone says it needs a paint job really badly and,i agree.It is probably more costly but,i think Sfgadv makes more then enough money to take better care of this woody.

I think that it depends on the surroundings as to whether a woodie should be painted or not. If the coaster is in a traditional boardwalk/midway environment then I like to see them painted as it is much more reminiscent of the golden age. However, if a coaster is by itself in the woods then it should be natural so that it blends in a little better and looks like it belongs in the woods.

I think the white looks good on racers(KW+PKI Racer/SFMM Colossus)

I love white coasters,, and the American Eagle is white too, at SFGA,, I think the coasters look bigger when they are white.. I think todays woodies are just built, and left the natural color, cause they just wanna hurry up and sometimes too lazy..lol nah, just playin

Personally, I do think they look great, but if a park has to choose between a new ride or just painting a woodie made of treated wood, i will take the new ride. Painting does still offer some benefits, as even treated wood will eventualy go bad, and painting can further delay the process. Its all a matter of money, and what the park wants to spend it on.
