The suspect decided to tuck in his shirt while running from the cops? Now that's an odd thing to do in such a situation as that. If I were the cop I would have shot him too -- not to kill, but I wouldn't wait for his gun to come out.

And since when did age equal maturity? A certain previous post clearly proved that wrong. This is just my opinion, but shouldn't people choose to shy away from such trash talk in forums? OK, sorry for keeping that going, but I've said my piece and I'll stay out of it now...

You don't have the first clue as to what you're talking about. Once the police tell you to stop and then you continue to run then you are committing the crime of escape but that never justifies shooting anyone in the back. How do I know this you might ask. Because I'm a ciminal defense clerk and the lawyers in my firm deal with these issues everyday. The cop has no right to shoot someone in the back if they are running away.

Now I'm nowhere near Cinci right now and haven't paid much attention to all the other details of this situation. BUT running from the police does not give them the right to shoot you, especially for the crimes that he was supposedly being stopped for. Sounds like b.s. to me.

I read in the paper that only 40% of Cincy is african-american. The highest crime rate area is the Over-The-Rhine area and that area is predominatly black, I think that the area should be patrolled by black police officers for a temporary solution to the problem. I think the city needs to pay more attention to its problems and less attention to the stadiums that aren't that old anyway.

As nearly as I can tell, it was a simple case of "contempt of cop." Cop says "Stop!", suspect runs, cop shoots suspect, cop figures suspect deserves it. Honestly, unless the cop in question had requested some of those outstanding warrants, do you really think he knew the length of the guy's rap sheet? But he knew he was a suspicious character, knew he had some reason for fleeing, and knew he was reaching for something. Unfortunately, this time, the cop's instincts were wrong. Does that excuse the cop? Absolutely not. But the suspect wasn't exactly angelic himself. The bottom line? They're both wrong. Unfortunately, one of them also happens to be dead.

I'm not really blaming the cop for shooting the man. I mean, being a police officer is a highly stressful job, and it is very possible that he feared for his life. But whatever happened to shooting people in the arm or the leg? What, did they stop having target practice? If you shoot an average person in the buttocks, they wont die, but I'd bet the farm that they would run so fast either.

I remember one of my criminal justice profs, a former police officer who also happened to be a lawyer, say that many police officers believe in the "fleeing felon" rule, regardless of its actual status in the courts at any given moment; that is, if the the person fleeing the oficer had committed a dangerous felony, the officers would pretty much agree that shooting was ok. Were the supposed grounds for the shooting (a) the alleged flight, or (b) the supposed weapon?
