Thanks John, I'll be out on the west coast next week and after looking at that I called husband and reminded him not to take the gas option on the rental car. There is no way we would use an entire tank for 4 days in San Diego with everything so close together.

Its a good way to shop around when on vacation, or just in a local area. poor tourists....

For the record, I took a look at the sign yesterday and found that I'm paying $2.32 a gallon for the 'premium' gas. The 'cheap' gas is $2.12.

Hell, I can't even be bothered to push the button furthest to the left to save 20 cents a gallon.

I am right handed after all and that's an awkward crossover thing I don't need to deal with. ;) ;)

I could cross town to pay 2.19 instead of 2.29, but it's five miles one way, which costs about 1/3-1/2 of a gallon anyway, so it's a losing proposition on a 12 gallon fill. If I'm there for some other reason (the good bookstore), then I'll stop if I'm thinking of it. Which usually I am not.

Didn't you say that your car requires it though?

I buy the mid-grade because that's what my car requires.

People are always saying their car "requires" high-test or whatever - I don't buy it.

My glasses "require" the use of a special cleaning solution, says my eye doctor, but my shirt-tail works just fine, and there have been no consequences. My electric razor "requires" you to change the foil every six months, but I've had the same one for years - no consequences.

Heh, I've suspected that as well, Den. I'm just doing what Nissan suggests for the car.

Do I personally think the car needs it? Don't care if it does or not.

I mean, the manual says to change the oil every 3750 miles. It's another one that I have no opinion on. Will the car go 5000 miles between oil changes with no issues? 10,000? Who knows?

I just do what the manual suggests. :)

You always put the required fuel into cars as stated in your manual.

Oil Changes: If you drive a ton of highway miles, then change it every 5,000 to 6,000. If you drive mixed or city, then change it every 3,000 to 3,500.

Doing this will prolong the life of your engine

My manual (01 Honda Odyssey) recommends oil changes every 7,500 miles (!) unless most of your trips are 5 miles or less or in 90+degree weather. I thought that was a surprisingly long oil change interval, but I can live with it. Particularly after a consumer reports article from the late 90's, that compared the "jiffy lube" interval (3000 miles) with the factory recommended interval (longer, but I don't recall) on a fleet of NYC taxi cabs.

The result? Changing the oil more frequently made no difference whatsoever.

Before that article, I was a religious every-3K person, figuring that an extra $100 per year (at most) was worth the benefits. No more.

I do it every 3K. My Jetta's manual says every 5K, but I start feeling guilty if I go over 3K...

Isn't that kind of in direct contradiction of the earlier post? :)

Looks like it to me too, Gonch.

But I'm guessing the $20,000 plus difference between the two items has a lot to do with that.
