Internship/co-op for mechanical engineer

Depending on which report you want to believe, I've heard that there is a dire shortage of younguns entering engineering majors to the point where, in 10-20 years, we'll have to either export most of our technology work to other countries or import engineers from other countries to do the work here.

So it sounds like there are plenty of opportunities out there for you guys and gals interested in becoming engineers. How much of that opportunity is in the amusement park field, I don't know. If you're an engineer in a different discipline, so what? The saying goes that the shoemaker's children go barefoot. Maybe you'll be better off keeping your love of coasters an extracurricular activity.

True, but the good thing about Aero is that you can also work as a Mechanical. The curriculum is nearly identical until senior year. I work at an Aerospace company but my primary job function is that of a Mechanical Eng. It's fun, but not as fun as what the Aero's do. Oh well, it keeps me hooked up in Louis Vuitton :)

I understand. I plan on trying to get a Masters in both Aerospace and Mechanical, just because they do overlap a lot.

I think I could classify as at a dream job as well, but I am not holding my breath. I am a junior Mechanical Engineering student. The market is not extremely strong especially in the United States as far as there being tons of companies that make roller coasters. However, the field is incredibly broad that opens up many different places to go with a degree. I also will mention that it is not easy and has caused some crazy times, but in the end very interesting and rewarding.

Yeah, I'm old enough that I'm a GMI grad, not Kettering. However, I'm not so ancient that it was still part of GM (pre-1982).

I'm still debating on which one I'd rather build here at Purdue University--weapons or targets.

I am studying to become an Electrical Engineer. I have already been accepted to the college of EE at Wright State University. I first got into engineering so I could work in the amusement industry, but I have changed my mind and would rather work for the auto industry. I believe it has more openings.
