Six Flags Should Buy Ghost Town

Ghost town was a great amusment park back in the day and still could be if the rides weren't neglected. The Red Devil was my very first looping roller coaster and I would hate to see it go to waste. Six Flags has bought many parks like this IMO. Plus it is a great location for any amusment park and it is up for sale.

Even by Six Flags standards that would be a bad mistake. That is a pretty bad location for a park. It is amazing it stayed open as long as it did.

Actually it is a great location for a park. On the side of a gorgeous mountain. Just because Six Flags usually has larger parks doesn't mean that they won't pick this one up. It may not have a super surplus of land space but you could fit a few more coasters there.

The simple fact that it's not easily accessible (chairlift, incline railroad) to most make it a tough sell. I hate to see it go away too, but come on. Six Flags Maggie Valley? :-/

I agree... its kinda amazing that this park stayed open as long as it did. While the terrain would make for some great coasters, I doubt they would be enough to make people go up the mountain in the first place.

It wouldn't have to be a Six Flags park for Six Flags to buy it. I don't know how big it is, but it can't possibly be smaller than Wyandot Lake.

And it wouldn't need new coasters... a few new flat rides and infrastructure, and perhaps an inclined rail up the mountain... it'd be great.

Actually I think it sound exactly like something SDC/Herschend Inc. would be interested in! They love smaller parks with interesting quirks! And as far as what you have to do to get there they would only consider it a plus! I think it would be a wonderful addition to their parks!

Oh yeah! I forgot about SDC~LOL. I still hope someone will pick the park up. And when I said a good location for a park I meant the parks overall setting. Ghost town had some pretty cool gun fight shows last time I went. Anyways hopefully the Red Devil won't be wasted.

I thought that Cedar Fair would be an even better candidate.

I visited Ghost Town in 2000. It it was kinda depressing the condition the park was in. IMHO, it looked slightly better than those defunct parks. Its sad since this park thrived for such a long time (then Dollywood came along) and it hasent been the same since. I don't think a major chain will pick it up because of small expansion space.

But I think HFE (SDC) should look into it.(they have done a good job with the parks theyve picked up over the years!)

SDC seems to be the best fit. They are already in the area (Dollywood -- Stone Mountain) and obviously the park can be had cheaply.

It would NEVER work under Six Flags and a pointless acquisition for Cedar Fair. The immediate area doesn't have the population density that's necessary to justify the effort. But there is rustic charm there if the place could be spruced up to keep its local color but more feasible for locals and visitors alike (like Idlewild perhaps). What about the owner of Wild Adventures? He's up for lost causes (i.e. Cypress Gardens).

I seem to remember that HFEC (then SDC Inc) looked at Ghost Town in the Sky a couple of years back and decided to pass on managing or buying the park.
Of course the deal back then may be different from the deal the park would accept today.

People forget that at one time Ghost Town was part of a chain. Florida's Six Gun Territory, Cherokee NC's Frontierland and Ghost Town in the Sky were once part of a Western-Themed park chain. Ghost Town is the only that was still surviving. Six Gun Territory Closed and Frontierland is now Santa's Land.

As for the Herchends, I had heard that they were going to buy Ghost Town (...or maybe it was Tweetsie) back in the 70's, but ended up buying Goldrush Junction of Pigeon Forge instead.

I Think they've looked at it again since then, but turned it down because of the Park's situation with Parking and Upkeep.

Getting to the park is perhaps the greates drawback of all. It just isn't something I could see any of the big chains being interested in.
