New amusement park in Pennsylvania?

I am hold that there are plans for an Amusement Park to be build in a small town in Pennsylvania. The Town is Jim Thorpe and is about 2 hours from Knoebels Amusement Park. Jim Thorpe is a small town in the Poconos and has a lot of history. Jim Thorpe was also known as Mauch Chunk before the name change in the 1950's. The greastest sports star is in the world lays to rest there. Mauch Chunk was a coal mining town. For more information on Jim Thorpe visit www.jimthorpe.com Back to the park. I have heard rumors that the park will be build somethime soon and it will feature 2 wooden roller coasters, 1 steel non looping coaster, kiddle rides, and 10 other theme park rides. I heard that plans are under way and the construction will not start for a least 3 months. The plans to be open by 2005.

This sounds great, where is the link to a story? I won't believe it until I see it in print.

Another little amusement park tie in with Jim Thorpe is that the famous Harry Packer mansion (located in Jim Thorpe) was used as the model for Disney's haunted mansion.

Nothing to do with the topic, but I like to mention it when Jim Thorpe and amusement parks share a sentence :)

Hey, I'm all for a new park in the area, it's just a short drive up the turnpike extention for me.

*Which* Haunted Mansion? They're all different.

Obviously, Disneyland's Mansion has a southern influence, while Walt Disney World's Mansion has a Dutch/Hudson River Valley influence. . . Paris' is Western American . . I have no idea about Tokyo Disneyland, but I suspect it's quite like Walt Disney World's.

Back to the history of Jim Thorpe, Asa Packer who owned coal mines used to live in a giant mansion on a hill known as Packer Hill. For a wedding gift he build the Harry Packer Mansion for his son. The Mansion in Disneyland is based after Harry Packer's Mansion. Both Asa's and Harry Packer's Mansion lay right next to each other on Packer Hill in downtown Jim Thorpe. The Asa Packer Mansion is open for tours the website is www.asapackermansion.homestead.com

Jim Thorpe isnt 2 hours from Knobels. Its an hour from my cabin in Tannersville and Jim Thorpe is a 1/2 hour from there. Both are going in the same direction.

Anyway, do you know where this park is being propsed to be built? Anywhere near Skirmish?

I do not know where in Jim Thorpe the park will be built but it might be near Skirmish since there is so much room in the woods for a park on the mountain.

Is it the same Mauch chunk as in the mauch chunk railway as in the first roller coaster in the US. If so that would be pretty cool.

Okay, I've looked at pictures of the this Harry Packer Mansion, and Disneyland's Haunted Mansion was *not* based on it. I can, however, see where Walt Disney World's Mansion may be, as they share a common architectural style.

Yes Mauch Chunk AKA. Jim Thorpe did have the Mauch Chunk Switchback Railroad. Which was used to carry coal and then used for a thill ride. It is known as America's First Roller Coaster and Mauch Chunk Museum is a local museum is Jim Thorpe has a real working model in there. Today parts of the real Switchback still stand and the same path that was used for the track is now a track used for hikers. The website for the Mauch Chunk Museum is www.MauchChunkMuseum.com

Weren't there plans to rebuild the Mauch Chunk Railway? Maybe the park will lay at the end of the route, and the original layout of the Mauch Chunk Railway be one of the wooden coasters? Wow, this could be great!

YES!!!! I hope this is true because my grandmother lives in Nesquehoning which is like 5 minutes away from Jim Thorpe. and 2 woodies, sounds great, hope they can match up to Phoenix and Twister. I wonder what the non looping steel will be. Morgan Hyper anyone??

I was primarily speaking from an enthusiast's point of view, but I can see your reasoning. Still, with a large non-looping coaster so close by, I would think that a new park would want to add something that can't be experienced at the competition's parks.

First off no one said Hyper. They said steel non looping. First thing I thought of was a wild mouse or some small coaster like that. It would be great if a park would open with 2 woodies and a hyper, but I doubt it unless this place is Universal Studios Pa or something along those lines.
