What was the ride 'The Edge' at SFGAm in the 80's?

I've researched my home park a lot, and I keep hearing about 'The Edge' and that it killed some one, and they took it out.


From what I gather, I think it is a 50 foot Superman( one in Texas) type ride.

I have no clue what this ride was. Could someone please inform me?? Thanx.

I bet this ride was a drop-type. . .the one in Texas was at SFAstroworld and was called The Skyscreamer. The ride takes you up inside and elevator type shaft (in a car that seats four and is open to one side), moves you forward once at the top, and then drops you to the bottom where you slide down into a position horizontal to the ground. The car is lowered and placed in a vertical position, moved backwards and reloaded to climb the shaft again. This ride was taken out of SFAW and sent to another park. It's also a very standard amusement park attraction.

BTW, where was this ride located at SFGAm? Did you happen to find that information? I also find it interesting (and I just learned) that the double-decker carousel at SFGAm was originally at SFAstroworld in Houston. Interesting tid-bit.

yeah, I think that's what it is. The picture I found (somewhere) looked like that. Thanks, for clearing that up, that would be strange to see that instead of Power Dive in that spot.

wow, i didn't know that either. It had to be moved for opening day in 1976 from Astroworld.

Anyways, the ride was where Power Dive is located right now.

yes it is. Like across from Roaring Rapids in New Orleans Place.

From the Shockwave entrance, you walk straight, under the train bridge, and take a left and you see the massive Power Dive (looping space-ship).

1st off, the Colombia Carousel was built from the ground up in 1976 when Marriott opened Great America(Wasnt at another park). Secondly, The Edge didnt kill anyone. The ride had an accident back in 1984 where I believe 3 people were injured. One year after that , the ride was removed and now resides at SFWOA as Mr. Hydes Nasty Fall. The Edge used to reside where the Power Dive is today located in New Orleans place.

Chitown, ask at the park the next time you're there. The carousel was moved from Astroworld. It's fact. I grew up at Astroworld.

Neat, this summer, i'm going to SFWoA. I'll hafve to remember to ride that. I like to ride past rides from SFGAm. I rode good ol' Z-Force or Flashback in SFMM a few years back, and I would like to ride the Tidal Wave again.

I gotta go and ride that one. That will give me a good ol' special feeling.

You're wrong, the Columbia Carousel was built at SFGAm for the opening of the 1976 season. It was never, repeat never, at another park. Your information in incorrect.

Ride Em, Cowboy, before you start spouting off claims, you need to get your facts straight. The Colombia Carousel was erected as an original at SFGAm and PGA. If you are so sure about yourself, then where did the Carousel at PGA come from?

Chitown, let's not turn into something unfriendly. To help back me up, go to the front page of coaster buzz, and click on the Six Flags Houston webpage. Surf around, I think it says something about it also.

Chitown is indeed very correct. Two Columbias were built for both Marriott parks' grand openings in the spring of '76. And yes, the Edge was the very same freefall ride that resides at SFWOA (aka Six Flags Ohio, aka Geauga Lake, etc.!). Demon Drop at Cedar Point is the same type of ride. Don't remember the manufacturer though (where are you Rideman!!?). No one has ever perished from experiencing these types of rides. And I believe they stand around 111-114 feet high.

As for the Tidal Wave, its last season was '91. Batman, the world's first inverted coaster, now stands where the mighty Wave was. Tidal Wave is currently operating (thank God!) at Six Flags Over Georgia as VIPER. What a thrill it was too! I loved the seconds leading up to the launch. All of a sudden the station lights started flashing and the crew gave each other a thumbs "down", and you knew there was no turning back! What a neat experience it is to go backwards too!

The manufacturer for The Edge(Mr. Hydes) is Intamin. This is their 1st generation freefall rides. Obviously they have come a long way with their modern freefalls like Giant Drop.

Marriott had both Columbia carousels built special for them. The frames and machinery were built by Chance and the figures and trim were by Bradley and Kaye. There was to be a third park built (in the Washington D.C. area, I believe)but after the first two parks were up and running Marriott killed the remaining project. The energy crunch of the mid 1970's soured them on the park business. There were components for a third Columbia, but as I understand it they were used for spare parts for the other two machines.

I think Ride Em, Cowboy, you are talking about the carousel in the Country Fair area outside the American Eagle. I think you might be right on that, because that came from Houston (I believe). But, Colombia is a 1976 orignal.
The double-decker Columbia Carousel is the largest (10 stories tall) and costliest carousel ever built, and includes original oil paintings, reproductions of sculpture used in movie sets, and careful reproductions of old-time carousel horses. The giant carousel features more than 100 animals -- on the lower level, pigs, cats, lions, tigers, deer, dragons, giraffes, sea horses, camels, rabbits and an ostrich, and all horses on the upper level. More than 1,000 lights outline the carousel, and floodlights illuminate its copper roof and spire at night. Reflected in a placid 180,000-gallon reflection pond, the Columbia is an awesome spectacle.

I must be wrong. I was just reporting information I had been given, and read elsewhere. I wasn't around to actually live it or hear about it first hand. Sorry! No need to be rude to the site newbies! Just trying to make conversation. Also, what type of ride is Tidal Wave? Is it like Montezumo's Revenge? I was at SFoverG this summer, but didn't ride Viper. I did ride Ninja, and must say that I'll NEVER step foot on that b*tch again! The way that thing shakes in the brakes. . .thought I was gonna die!
