Fun or Fear: SLC's

ALF is cool

Monday, January 13, 2003 7:44 PM

So, I was looking through my psychology book, and came across an interesting picture. It is a picture of an SLC with a caption "Fun or Fear?". I started cracking up, because everyone says they are pretty rough (I have yet to ride an SLC). But, are SLC's that "scary" from the roughness, or are they fun?

They scare the death out of me. Not because they are rough but because they rattle to death and feel as if you are about to fly out as the train breaks in half at any second. I just simply abhore the things. Some people like them. I despise them. It's not a good fear its a literal fear for my life. Of all the coasters I have ridden none gave me that feeling as T2 and Serial thriller did and I think that says a lot.

I don't know how they do it but they throw you forward while moving forward, it's odd as heck really.

Fear: No. Fun: No :)

Some people love them...more power to them. Me, I hated the first one I rode (T2), I hated the 10th one I rode (SFNE), and all in between.

So far, I've loved every single one of them (actually, I love pretty much all Vekomas-Roller Skaters, Flyers, Boomerangs, etc.) and its strange that the only one I didn't like is Hangman at Wild Adventures, which most people seem to enjoy or at least find ridable.

T2 was creepy the first time I rode it which was in the back seat and had great air and footchopper elements on the camelback by the station, but the rest have been good (especially Serial Thriller, my favorite so far).

So, could be both or could not be either as demonstated above and will probably continue to. :)

I found out that the stories I heard were exaggerated, and of all the SLC's I've ridden, none were "rough". So I would say they're fun. A little vibration ain't gonna kill you, especially with the padding some of those trains have on the OTSR's.

It all depends on where you ride it. SFWoA's Serial Thriller is quite smooth and Fun. But if you go to SFEG it'll be rough and fearful. So it depends on what SLC you're talking about

I peronaly enjoy them a lot. I mean they are rough but it seems more like a woodie rough to me, adds to the experience if you know how to ride it and can take some head banging. Just never ever ride one 8 times in a row. I had the worst headache of my life after that.

The SLC at SFWoA has a harness on the front of one train with DUCT TAPE all over it.

Serial Thriller at SFWoA was great! Of course, I had years of the almighy Shockwave at SFGAm to teach me the difference between rough and smooth! :)

At first I was scared as heck, but Minderaser at EG is the big ride and now I just find it really fun, and laugh the whole way through it! SFEG is my home park, and the minderaser is the only one that I have been on.

I like slc's quite a bit too. They can be incredibly fun if maintained well. In fact (besides Alton's Corkscrew), the only Vekoma rides I really don't like are the Roller Skaters. I haven't been on one for a while, though.

When parks actually put the work to keep up these rides then they can be amazing, like Black Out for instnace. Some SLCs are awsome and I can reride them many times, but most of the SLCs we have out here are the roughed up Mind Erasers and Thrillers which are poor quality. The only SLCs that ever gave me true enjoyment were Mao Twister, Kong, Black Out, and Hangman.

My friend Rebino just came back from South Africa on an internship and said that Cobra was more thrilling than most Batman:The Rides!

I don't see what is so bad about SLC's. Yes they are a little rough, but if it is to the point where you call it fear, you are a wimp. It is a great layout with a great drop and 5 inversions one after another. So many elements packed in a tiny space.

What's bad about the SLC's at least from a safety standpoint is that the restraints have a tendency to pop loose or even open on you mid ride.

I don't know about anyone else but that's what I fear most about the ride having experienced that problem on 3 seperate rides & on both trains within a two year period.

SLC's rock. Wish I had one in my backyard.

This post is a result of reading several similarly senseless posts today. Enjoy!

The only SLC I've ridden is Top Gun at PCW. Talking to some of people in the line who have only ridden the coasters at PCW, they said it was the greatest thing since sliced bread. I did experience some roughness but nothing horrible. The roughness that confused me was the forward and backward roughness. I've never really experienced that before. The ride would be great if it had some flow to it, unfortunately, I thought it felt as if we were going backward and forward a few times and found it to be very distracting from the ride itself.

Blackout at Suzuka Curcuit, Japan = Godly

Kong at SFMW = Ungodly

I have actually never ridden one I didn't like until Kong this last summer. It wasn't so bad last time, but man was it bad in July 2002.
