Fun or Fear: SLC's

I rode Kong around the same time you did, Nasai. I did not like it either. Just too rough for my tastes, and I am generally fairly tolerant in that respect.

Fear: after seeing the test-results of El Condor; yes.
Fun: absolutely! :)

Dutch Coastin' :: European coasters, thrills and theming!

The only SLC experience I have had was on Serial Thriller at SFWOA. I didn't find it to be that rough at all. I was even able to stay on it a few times and reride it. So I guess you could say it was fun.

May be a bit obscure here, but somehow I have the impression that the psych book was not so much saying "SLC's: Fun or Fear?" but rather "Rollercoasters (in general): Fun or Fear?" If the writers would have had a pic of a wooden coaster that looked more fierce than the pic of the SLC they could have just as easily used that. I highly doubt that a text book would split hairs as far as different types of coasters. Face it, most normal people (i.e. those who not spend their time visiting sites like this) lump coasters together (Okay.... they might differentiate between "Wood", "Steel", "ones that go 'upside down'").

Kind of hard to take a post as objective if a park or coaster name is part of the "user name"

Dude, he never said that the book was asking the question about SLCs specifically. It just inspired him to ask the question.

On topic: I too enjoyed Serial Thriller, although if it means I have to go to SFWoA to ride it, maybe its not worth it ;)

Just don't be stupid. It's really not that hard.

It's made by Vekoma....that's all that really needs to be said about a SLC......

Is there some sort of oath you have to take to become an enthusiast that dictates you must hate Vekoma? Thank God I'm not an enthusaist, then. I love Deja Vu, Invertigos, some SLCs, Roller Skaters, and Rock 'n Roller Coaster. I even like boomerangs. I liked Ninja @ SFoG. I'm willing to wager that most of you morons that make blanket statements about Vekoma also enjoy voting a straight party ticket.

Batwing,

Its reassuring to know that I'm not the only one whose had the restraint pop open on them mid-ride....

Happened to me on Serial Thriller on two seperate occasions.

Ahh so SFA's Mind Eraser isn't the only culprit then huh?

Hey DRNK what exactly happened on El Condor's initial test runs that made it so fearful looking? did it nearly crash or something?

....agrees with Mark on all rides except the standard Boomerang....although, WA has a Boomerang AND an SLC that are both quite smooth most of the time....and they're open YEAR-ROUND....;):):):)

RnRC is amazing though.....most *inverting* Vekoma rides do leave a little to be desired for smoothness....not that one!

I love SLC's. Top Gun at PCW is a great ride and while it is rough, it is tolerable. :)

I think people hate SLC's because of the opinions of everyone else. I notice that some people instantly form opinions of ride before even riding them.

Ah the marvelous "Hang and Bang", oh how I loathe thee...

I have ridden one SLC and hated the experience. I left with such a headache that it made me think it was worse than Shockwave at my homepark SFGAm. Not the fault of Vekoma, but the SLC I rode, Serial Thriller at SFWOA, was in some rough shape. Several retraints either had chunks of them missing, or were duct taped to death. The day I was there they were *gasp* running two trains and I sat on the final brakerun for about 10 minutes which I found to be very uncomfortable. Oh, and my opinion doesnt come from others on this board. I went on the ride with an open mind, nay, a positive mind about the ride, and was sorely disappointed.

"Sorry folks, park's closed. The moose out front should've told you."

I'm surprised to hear that, Bob. My rides were smooth as glass. And since the park was empty that day, I got 6 rides on it in a short period of time without any aches or pains.

Different days, different ways...

A failure in society is a failure of society.

My single SLC ride (SFWOA) was butta smoove. In fact, maybe with a little too much butta. I rode in the back row and was kinda bored. I would have welcomed a little bit of violence.

I passed on SFKK's Woulda-been-a-Batman because I heard some bad rumblings about it and had already been on my 99th coaster. First and last time I'll do anything for a count.

So to the question, SLC: Fun or Fear? I say, Huh?

In general I hate Vekoma but the only two that I have enjoyed where Face/Off and X-Flight and their kiddies aren’t to bad......In few years I'm sure Face/Off will become a typical boomerang....Ruff!!! And as for X-Flight it was sweet the first couple of times I rode it. But after riding Superman Ultimate Flight I'd say it is less appealing now. But then again that can be said about of a lot of coasters. Another qualm I have against Vekoma is that when I was at SFOG Deja Vu was broken all day and it was toward the end of the season. I'm from Michigan and Georgia is a bit far to drive on a regular basis and I know there is one a SFGAM but I'm moving to Florida in 2-weeks so that's not going to happen this year.

Sorry Nasai, I rode Kong in 1997 and 1998, it was perfect for me then.

I rode it back in 2000, and it was fine, but it is terrible now with a capital O. ;)

Definitely 'fun.' SLCs could be 'awesome,' if the trains didn't shake so much, but alas...

The layout absolutely rocks, though.

I love the look on Brents face on Serial Thriller, I wish I had the picture!!

I just dont get it, they are not rough (T2, Serial Thriller the two I have been on), but abrupt. I actually love the feeling of learching forward in your seat as the car climbs up the loop and switches back and forth between up wheel and down wheel as if its confussed about which wheels are in control.

My view may be the result of never experienceing a B&M prior to my ride on T2 so I had nothing to compare it to.
