Big wood coasters that have survived time.

What are teh big wood coasters out there that have been around for 10 years or more and still run pretty smooth or really smooth. I would have to say that American Eagle is pretty darn smooth for its age and from what I hear about other old wood coasters by Charles and Dinn. So which BIG wood coasters (3,000 ft long or more or 100' tall or more) have stood the test of time and which haven't and why is that the case for either side?

Thats hard, considering that a coaster's smoothness decreases over time and most woodies arent built to be smooth to begin with....

(Yes, it was once the Crystal Beach Cyclone and then the Comet at Crystal Beach. Then it was moved to The Great Escape.)

It is still an awsome woodie though! The best in my opinion. If I was a coaster designer, THIS would be the coaster I would try to clone. (Not the Cyclone)

Who's Charles and Dinn? Dinn and Summers?

Without considering CCI, I say that White Cyclone is the only big woodie over 5 years old that I thought was in good shape. Around 91 or so I rode La Monstre and thought it wasn't bad. The Beast is also in great shape, but is in a category of it's own.

Sheesh, just because someone is new to the enthusiast scene is no reason to belittle them.

Charles Dinn is considered one of the most famous (or infamous) designers of all time. The brainchild of the "second generation" of wooden roller coasters. If anyone else has some more detailed info, please chime in.

BTW to Darth Saambe, welcome to the world of coasters.

Texas Cyclone (3180' long and 26 years old) still runs great IMO. There's hardly ever down time for the Cyclone and is one of the most reliable rides at SFAW.

That's not really a big coaster, man! :) We're talking the likes of Rattler, Texas GIant, Mean Streak, etc.

HA! Soggy, I used to have another name on here but decided to switch. I dunno why just felt like it was time to get a new name. I've been riding since I was 6.

The thing is... and I'm not trying to spark anger here, but lately I've heard not so great things about the Texas Giant.

People say it's rough.

I've never heard ANYTHING bad about The Comet so...

I think it wins. :-)

Hmmmm...breaks, breaks, and more breaks. It is surviving, but just barely. Not to say it still doesn't give one heck of a ride, just not the ride it once did gve.

It has its on and off days, however lately it seems to be having more off days than on. Though I think sometimes people confuse intensity with roughness.

Black 7, hate to tell you but The Beast has always had brakes in the same locations it does today.

The new magnetic brakes may maje it seem worse but the seed is still the same, the slowdown just happens all at once as opposed to gradually like with the skids.

well being a PKI employee at the beast it has survived since the opening in 79 and the only modifications have been those dreaded brakes and they had to rebuild some parts.. the beast i great it only experienced one mishap the train slid through the brakes and hit anther train. but other then that I love that ride its great. I hope to ride it myself when I am in my 30's
