It's standard practice in the steel erecting industry to hang a christmas tree and American flag with the last piece of steel. This usually carries over into erecting coasters as well.

"Cedar Point will announce its new ride within the next few weeks, according to a conference call to investors by Richard Kinzel, who is the chief executive officer of the park's parent company, Cedar Fair. "

Let's see... November 14th + December 18th = around 5 weeks... and still no official announcement. Man, the suspense is still killing me. Not for what it's going to be like, what it's going to do or all that... but just the official name, the theme, and how it's going to be publicised (sp)!!

I knew most coasters are topped with a flag. I had never heard that about Xmas trees. You learn something new every day...

It's not really an xmas tree but just a tree of some sort, and it usually goes on the tallest part of the structure, not neccesarily the last piece. It's a superstition relating the strength of the structure to the tree. Like "As long as the tree stands, the building will stand" or something.

I thought it was almost always an evergreen when buildings were topped out. But yes, I'd heard of that; no, I wasn't aware that the tradition carried over to coaster erection.

Son of Beast had an Xmas tree up there when it was being built, i remember that. I dont know if any pics are floaring around, but the tree thing must be an industry standard!

Well it didn't work in SOB's case now did it? Well maybe it did, A couple weeks after the tree was removed, The wind blew the second hill to shreds.

Chuck, Not making a comment on the ride good or bad till I ride it myself.

Those aren't NBC affiliates. The station that generated the original is in Cleveland, an ABC affiliate. My guess is that they're all owned by Scripps Howard.

I agree Jeff. Our local ABC affiliate, WXYZ, did a piece that seemed very similar. When I used to work there, they said it was the "backbone" of Scripps Howard.

If only, Billy Bonds would come back ;)

FYI... Actually, none of those are Scripps owned stations. I know because I work for Scripps.

Just to scramble things up more, NBC4 Columbus is network O&O. But, if one NBC (or other net/company affiliate) picks up a story, usually the other affiliates get it too - it's up to the news director what to do with it.

Isn't technology grand? :)

I think a tree on the tallest part of the ride symbolizes that no one was killed in the construction of the building/coaster.
