What's with the B&M flying coaster's first drops?

Check out this picture of Superman UF.. Is it just me, or does the first drop look kind of well, weak?

I don't know but the first drop on Vekoma's designs look much more intense. -I know that AIR has a limited height, and it will be more of a build up of speed, (like Nemesis) but couldn't the georgia version have a more fierce drop?

I mean, what's up with that?

I think part of the novelty of the B&M flyer is the fact that it features an intense, ground-hugging flight.  Personally, I think the fact that it can stay low and still get speeds up to 60+ will make for a great ride.

Sitting upright or standing, that would appear weak but in a flying position, I dont see a problem with it.

I was thinking the same thing.  The thing is hella shallow....I guess this was done for g's sake!

People made the same comments about Nemesis first drop before it opened. Looks can be deceiving. :)

yeah, when your lying down facing down, im sur eit will seem alot higher than it is and im sure it will feel intense.

In other words, if the drop is steep, you would practically be standing on your head. Not very comfortable, well for the first rows as they crawl over. Plus steeper drops would need bigger pull-outs to keep the Gs down - very critical when it comes to a Flyer.

Yes, the drop may look weak, but that is only visual standpoint. Don't judge the ride until you have actually experienced it.

I think the ride will be awesome. But what is that at the bottom of the drop? At first I thought it was a trim...Tell me it is not a trim!

That actually does look like a trim.  I hope not.

I think it would ahve been really cool if it flew through a tunnel at the bottom of the drop... which sets you up for the Pretzel loop =) .. at least there is a tunnel later in the ride... I really want to ride this thing!

It's not a trim.  B&M uses those in valleys now for rollback purposes.  It won't be on, don't worry.

That picture must be pretty deceiving because isn't that suppose to be a 100 foot drop?

The vertical position would be no problem since you and the train are accelerating at the same rate.  The Vekoma Dutchmen already go straight down coming out of the loop.  The real limit on the first drop is the pullout in the flying position.   If you get too steep, there just isn't room for the large radius pullout needed to limit Gs to the 2.0 or so that is the limit in face down flying position.

Like some others have said, this is a *flying* coaster.  You cannot do the same inversions, drops, etc that you can on other coasters because of the postition you are riding in.

There will never be a flying coaster with a straight down, steep plummet.  It can't be done do to the nature of the seating.

The sooner people realize this, the less of these "B&M flying coaster drops suck!" we will have on CBuzz. :)

Yeah that drop isn't as steep as many coasters which is pretty obvious.  The angle of that picture, however, I think makes it look less steep than it really is.  I've seen other pictures from other angles and it looks more steep than that.  Don't forget, B:TR has a smaller drop and is one of the most intense rollercoasters around.

I think the flip over at the top will make the Dutchmans initial drop better.  We shall see though.

That is indeed a trim break on the bottom of the first hill.  I don't know how much it will trim, my guess is a very very small amount.  There is one more trim located elsewhere on the ride.

 

After being on site a few times, I can say that those pictures of the ride are deceiving. The coaster is monstrous, pictures don't do it justice. ;)

Well look at the Vekoma Flyer's...when you are watching them they seem sooo slow...but when you ride them it feels like you are going ten times that speed.

Don't worry.  It's a brake, but it won't be on.  Many recent B&M's have them in case of rollbacks (Talon and BKF are 2 examples)  They are pretty much never used.  I've never seen them on.
