Raging Bull

    Why does Raging Bull need brakes on the third hill?  It ruins most of the air time that hill could have.

Don't ask me, I just always thought it was for safety of the passengers.

I think that it had to do with bad designing(not that its a bad ride), had they made that hill a little taller, they wouldn't need the brakes.

Doesnt it have to do with effectively running a 3-train operation? Isnt that brake supposed to help that cause along with the mid-course brakes?

I don't even feel it for the most part. When the train goes over it, I hear a little puff, but I don't feel anything. Oh well, still an awesome ride.

I am not sure, but maybe it does have to do with running 3 trains.  However, I think that on the first hill after the little dip there are brakes there too, so that would be plenty of brakes to operate 3 trains.

A trim brake does not count as a block, so it can in no way effect the # of trains that can be run.

I am not sure of this one at all, but i had a friend who worked Bull its opening year, and she said something about the trains "perfect" interval being, in the station, on the lift, and in the midcourse brakes (ya know, right before the camera).  Perfect would be they are right next to each other on the lift and midcourse brakes.

So that would mean that the trim brakes on the 3rd hill have nothing to do with the amount of trains being operated.

Phantom's Revenge had trims installed so that it might have 2 train operation. The trains were going so fast, they would overshoot the final break run by several feet, so 2 train operation wasn't possible.

So, the only possible reason for the trim brake on the third hill would be safety?

I could be way wrong on this but when I rode it the opening year I don't remember a trim being there, I remember being surprised the second year when I saw a black strip and I heard the noise when I went over it.

The only reason I can think of is maybe the forces were too extreme, and B&M or the park wanted a tamer coaster. The ride, IMO, would have alot more airtime on that hill if it weren't for that trim. There's another trim right before the figure 8 finale which I think hurts that part of the ride. There could be nice laterals if it didn't slow it down. I think RB would be a much better ride if it didn't have all those brakes, but I'm sure they are there for a reason.

Yes, brakes are put in for a reason. I was just guessing with the 3-train operation theory. It could still hold true because maybe without the trim on the 3rd hill, the mid-course brakes were having to be applied to heavily.

Those are not brakes of any sort. They are sensors. When the train passes them, the chain lift turns itself off. I can't seem to find the pic of the top of the drop WITH the sensors in view, but if I find it, I'll show you, and you'll be able to see they cannot move (therefore they can NOT be a brake)

has anyone else noticed the brakes at the bottom of the drop after the wrap around turn around the first drop?  after the mid course brakes there's the air hill, then a turn around the first drop, then a drop with a flat section and brakes just before the figure 8.  would it be safe to assume that those brakes and the ones before the third hill are for the same or similiar purpose (blocking, reduce g's, reduce stress on coaster, etc.)?

TrBigger: those look pretty big for sensors.  not that I'm saying you're wrong 'cause God knows I know s*** when it comes to the mechanics of coasters, but the really, really look like brakes.

The brakes on the third hill have always been there,  I rode it opening day and remember them being there.  The brakes don't do much anyhow so it doesn't really matter to me I still get plenty of airtime over that hill.  I also agree with Trbiggar I don't think those are brakes on the top of the first hill.
