You don't know pain like I know pain...
Dan H. and I were marathoning Magnum the second to last weekend at Cedar Point. It was cold and rainy, and the number of guests thined out to around a couple of thousand if that. You could go a minute without someone passing you on the midway.
It was an historic day of sorts. For the first time in at least five years, Magnum was reduced to a one-train operation. After taking the second train off, they sent an empty train. The wind was coming off the lake so hard that it almost didn't crest the second hill. We couldn't believe they were even attempting to run the ride. Secretly, we hoped for a rollback.
That first lap was brutal. They wouldn't send the train unless it was completely loaded. We crested the lift, and nearly had to cover our faces from the blowing water. My eyes had never watered like this. We crested the second hill and slowed to a crawl... the supports passed underneath us one at a time, and so very slow. Finally, we started to pickup speed again. Through the tunnel, over the hill, through the open trims and in to the pretzel, where we again started to slow. While they normally would bruise your legs, the bunny hops on the way back provided no air time.
Much of the rest of the day went like this, and we ended the day with 42 laps. The next day, I went to work with windburn.
What one does to play on the coasters!
