Why Can't Hyper Coasters Have Loops?

Why can't hyper coasters have loops? Is it because they don't want loops or because they said too much intensity?? Only Steel Phantom and Manhattan Express have loops.

Well Steel Phantom was very ROUGH and was a headbanger. Star attractions at parks are usually not headbangers anymore.

People enjoy smooth rides. :)

Bolliger and Mabillard should make a hyper coaster with loops. They make the smoothest.

With the "revelation" that lap bars are safe while upside down, I wouldn't be surprised if we see a couple hypers incorporating a few inversions. I still can't imagine why there hasn't been a hyper with a record breaking loop.

To me, inversions on a traditional hyper coaster ruin the whole hypercoaster feeling. The point of a hyper to me is, speed, hills and airtime. Behold Maggie and MF. :)

If hypers had loop they would also have shoulder restraints. Wouldn't that make the ride very intense?? Like when you drop 300 feet with shoulder restraints? I'm sure theres a lot of head banging.

I don't like the idea of a hypercoaster with loop(s). It would just look weird.

It depends what inversions you are talking about Roar. You don't necessarily need OTSRs. As much as people don't like the idea of inversions on a hyper, you can't deny that an 180ft.+ loop would be incredible. It's not a matter if they can have loops, does the park want them?

Everyone seems to forget that Son Of Beast, as bad as the ride may be, is a hyper coaster, and has a loop.

Another factor would be cost. A B&M hyper multi-looper would have a tremendous cost. The technology is definitely there, but there's got to be a park willing to do it and have a check book large enough.

Look at MF, if they consider Mantis's inclined loop an inversion, than MF's over-banked turns are too.

Alpengeist is almost 200ft., and the one invert being built across seas is going to be around 200ft. I think B&M should do it, since they could just make the inversions larger.

BigDave you are right. And its wood, which, bangs you up even more (compared to steel) Personally I would like to see some Hypers or even a Giga with a loop :)

hey roar. people dont want loops on hypers. look at steel phantom aside from the headbanging i think i would hate the loops!! its combining 2 different coaster types. and there is defonately going to be one half that is better then the other, thus making people wish they had added 4 bunny hops instead of 2 loops or something like that. if there was a loop on SFDL superman, i would go nuts. i would be so mad. even if they had lap bars. cause instead of that 150 foot loop they could have had a 150foot hill that would give lots of airtime.

and for some reason i hate ALL normal sit down loopers yet i love floorless. i find it wierd. even kumba doesnt make it into my top 10.

When Kennywood built the Steel Phantom, I think they tried to do too much. They wanted a looper, and they wanted a huge record breaking coaster. They got both, but the only problem was track/trains, really. It was a great design, but the bottom of the second drop was way too rough.

I agree with Compressed Airhead. Although this isn't really trying something new. Alpengeist is 197 feet tall and it's a looper. It's almost a hyper. I mean, looping coasters used to be under 100 feet, and they surpassed that barrier.

I just think it's funny how people say it would feel weird riding a hyper looper. Yeah it felt weird going upside down for the first time too. Coasters are evolving, and that's going to continue for a long time...

I think the Intamin hypers could probably do most of the inversion elements we see today (heck, Millennium Force has three cutbacks on it :) ), but the Arrow and Morgan coaches are probably too long to navigate any looping element that isn't enormous.
Well, Phantom's Revenge could probably handle inversions, but then, that's an Arrow multi-element chassis.

Dave, you would probably know this better than I... Do you think B&M speed coaster trains are capable of inversions as is (or with little adjustment) or would they need to be redesigned in some way?

The general consenus seems to be that hypers with inversions might be too intense to be enjoyable for the general public. I would definitely enjoy a hyper with loops, i would consider Alpengeist an hyper and thats on my top 10.

Why is Son of Beast such a bad ride?? I thought some people said it was good. I don't see it at any of the top coaster lists.
