First coaster to top 100ft?

Ok, everyone knows the world's first 200ft, and 300ft coaster...what about the first 100ft coaster?

Just a guess, but isn't it Gemini? I'm pretty sure when it opened it was the tallest coaster in the world, but I don't know what the tallest one before it was.

Blue Streak of Woodcliffe Pleasure Park. It opened in 1928 and stood an amzaing 127' high with a 140' drop.

In modern times, the Great American Scream Machine at SFOG claimed to be the tallest, fastest, longest coaster ever built when it opened in 1973. Until SF opened the Screaming Eagle at SFSTL, which they then boasted was the tallest, fastest . . .

All this time though, SF failed to recognize La Montana Rusa(now called Serpiente de Fuego)in Mexico City, built in 1964, which topped out at 110ft. *** This post was edited by Draco on 7/12/2001. ***

I think it was GASM at SFoG when it opened in 1973, but I really don't know. Of course, the height probably got the 2nd tallest coaster after another park built a higher one.

I'd just like to discuss the usefulness of reading other posts before posting. Notice how I already listed a coaster built in 1928. Now, with that in mind, does GASM really sound like it was the first? Instead, try posting a coaster built earlier than 1928, if there are any...

Where is/was this park of pleasure?

I believe this park was located in the town of Poughkeepsie, New York, on the Hudson River. My sister went to the College there, Marist College, and I still can't spell the town name. ;)

In 1989 wasn't Excalibur at Valleyfair the first the height is 105 feet?

The terrifying Bobsleds at Palisades Park in New Jersey held the record for tallest roller-coaster
even long after it was demolished.

When PKI opened the Beast in 1979, only then did the Bobsleds at beloved Palisades lose their record for tallest roller-coaster.

That can't be, because CP's Gemini opened the year before, and it carried the bill of "World's Tallest Rollercoaster..."

Though it was not 100', the Flying turns at Euclid Beach opening in 1934 featured a height of 90'. So some coasters were indeed generally high....By contrast the Thriller at Euclid was 71' built in 1924

Viper: Excaliber opened in 1989, but so did Magnum at 205ft. tall.

Gemini was the world's tallest coaster standing when it opened, but it didn't break any records. The record was held by the Blue Streak from 1928-1979, over 50 years.

HUH? If it was the world's largest coaster that year (and it was), how did it not break any records? Also, is there another Blue Streak you are talking about? Because the one at CP didn't break anything and was built in the 60's.

What he said was that Gemini was the tallest STANDING coaster. One that was taller had been torn down (the Blue Streak) shortly before Gemini opened. Therefore Gemini did not break a record for the tallest roller coaster ever, just the tallest in existence. And if people would actually read the threads you would see that the Blue Streak in question was located at Woodcliffe Pleasure Park. There were several Blue Streaks over the years, so it doesn't always mean the one at CP.

When the Gemini was built was it a racing coaster or did they add that later?

Didn't the Blue Streak drop into a ravine to accomplish that drop though? If so it was the first with a 100ft. drop, but not the first 100ft. tall coaster.
