Xcelerator and Tower of Terror construction update

Posted | Contributed by James Disney

Knott's has finally announced their 2002 project, Xcelerator. More supports have arrived for the coaster, no new track has arrived in almost two weeks. Inside the park, work walls have been pushed out to allow site prep work as they await Buena Park's City Council to address the ride.

Over at the Disneyland Resort, serious ground movement has begun for the Bug's Town project in California Adventure along with some light ground movement over on the Tower of Terror site.

It's  kinda like a free fall ride and it's heavily themed to The Twilight Zone shows. It's really really cool!! go the digital Disney sight and they have the whole ride in a movie. i'll see if i can find the sight as soon as good ole AT&T @ home gets their act together...;)

Its likely (although I don't believe it is confirmed) to be a clone of the Tower of Terror at MGM Studios in Florida at the Walt Disney World Resort.

It is far from a clone!  It's being built down into the ground 50 feet or so, however the ride itself will be entirely above ground to my knowledge.  Only mechanical aspects will be below ground.  Instead of 199 feet in Florida, this one will stand around 140-150 feet or so.  The drop shaft will still be 130 feet.

This tower will also have the appearance of being backwards.  Since there's no "ride through" 5th dimension area, you do simply stop and experience the "show" there and then continue in the same shaft.  It was decided that the 5th Dimension ride room being the cause of many of the ride's downtimes, would be cut in it's current form.  There will still be a show however it will be rather different since you're not riding through it.

The tower will also have a bit of a different look.  Don't expect the familiar look of Florida's tower.

So I'm guessing its nothing like the Tower of Terror at Dreamworld, Australia? (110 meters I think)

The Tower of Terror here also has to sit down free falls on either side of the tower (The Giant Drop). This is the best Ride I've been on ever.

It has NOTHING like it... this is a highly themed attraction.

"AW!! But Florida's tower lloks sooooo cool!!!"

I agree... but this one will be just as distinct and very pretty.

G'day ZZ. At last, another fellow Aussie! Welcome to one of the best coaster sites on the 'net. You from QLD?

Yup, GD rocks! T.o.T & LW are the best coasters in Aussie, period.

Ok, back to the topic. What offical announcement? There is nothing on their site, no layout, nothing.

Yeah I'm from brisbane :)

I'm, prolly going this week (havn't been in over 6 months) as a friend of mine has half-price entry till the end of the week. I havn't been on LW yet (its hard to justify going to Movie-World for one day just for one ride, but I will get around to it, cause I really want to go on it). I'm also going to go back after christmas when Cyclone is open.

Is TOT as tall as superman the escape at SFMM? (It look easily as tall from photos)

I love the takeoff speed of TOT, but I think GD has the edge is thrills. I get really giddy at heights, so the GD is awesome for me :) *** This post was edited by zztopless on 12/17/2001. ***

I think you are thinking of a different TOT...

Ahh...TOT, the only freefall with lapbars!
Do they still have the seatbelt seats?  I remember there being one or two per car.  Now that was airtime, especially if the belt didn't catch right away! LOL

Does anyone have any tech info on this hydraulic launch system?

Without the chaindog, you'd never get up the lifthill...
"Does anyone have any tech info on this hydraulic launch system?"

I dunno to be quite honest.  I don't think any tech info has been released.

Now there's finally an concept artwork of Knott's Berry Farm's Xcelerator. It looks very short but i bet that non inverted tophat must feel great! :) Artwork here > http://www.screamscape.com/html/knott_s_berry_farm.html <

Yeah, the lapbars rock!

Thre first time I rode TOT I was like wtf? how am I supposed to stay in this thing? But they do work well, and give amazing freedom. I was riding mth my friend and his little brother one time, and right at the climax of the ride (at the top) his brother who was in front of us actually turned around and laughed! *** This post was edited by zztopless on 12/18/2001. ***

So what exactly is the ride cycle on the TOT at Disney World? I have never been there and I never had understood how it works. Can someone fill me in? I know it's kinda like a freefall.. right?

Hey James Disney,

Does this mean that the 4 load shafts (like at MGM) would all be drop shafts?  That would look pretty cool out front to see 4 shafts instead of just 2 dropping people at any given time!

-Shady

There are 3 shafts that's it... no seperate load and drop shafts.  Oddly, it'll still have a higher capacity than Florida.
