X takes top honors in Coasters' Choice Awards

CoasterBuzz today announced the winners of the 2002 Coasters' Choice Awards at http://coasterschoice.coasterbuzz.com/.

“Six Flags Magic Mountain and Arrow Dynamics have clearly produced something special with X,” says Jeff Putz, chief editor of CoasterBuzz. “This new ‘4th Dimension’ ride has captured the imagination of a lot of people with its innovative trains and its massive structure.” X won the awards for Coaster of The Year as well as Best New Steel Coaster.

Knott’s Berry Farm’s GhostRider captured the Best Wood Coaster award away from the classic Beast at Paramount’s Kings Island, while Cedar Point out ranked itself with Millennium Force taking the title of Best Steel Coaster from Magnum across the park.

Busch Gardens Williamsburg claimed the title of Best Food after narrowly losing to Universal’s Islands of Adventure last year. The Islands and Cedar Point retained their awards for Best Theme and Best Capacity, respectively.

The biggest surprise came in the Park of the Year category, where Cedar Point again claimed the throne without building any significant new attractions.

“What can I say, there’s no logic to the obsession people have with Cedar Point. People love it as an important part of their lives,” says Putz.

Twisted Rails ran away with the Coaster Site of the Year Award, after its coverage of X construction last year. The site updated frequently with clear, high-resolution photos from the construction site. It continues to document construction at Knott’s Berry Farm, where the Xcelerator is being built.

The nominees were chosen by thousands of nominations made from the CoasterBuzz databases in February and March. These databases include over 1000 coasters and 350 amusement parks. The five nominees in each category with the most nominations were chosen for the final award vote. Coaster Site of The Year nominees were chosen by the CoasterBuzz editors and moderators, based on the quality of content and the ability to stand out on the crowded Web. 26,570 votes were cast across the ten categories.

So, how many people that voted for Collosus actually rode it?

Ugh, I can't believe the Beast lost. Oh well. There is always next year. :)

Jet Coaster: I wasn't making an arguement nor complaining about it. That was just my opinion on how interesting this *popular* opinion would be with Legend and SOB on there. Note my Collosus and Hypersonic comparisons and you would see exactly why I said this. It doesn't matter whether I voted for Legend on anything. If it was my second favorite wooden coaster, I think I would still like to see how it came out. So, I have to give a big "huh?" in why you responded like that. It really didn't seem necessary. And read the whole post please. Thanks.

I honestly voted for Magic Mountain as Park of the Year. I love my Cedar Point, but other than being Cedar Point I really didn't feel they did something worthy of that title.

I never understood the "best park capacity" thing. I've never noticed a park deal with crowds better than other parks. Am I being oblivious, or something?

No your not Chad, but it's a matter of what you do with those crowds, not how many enter your park. Cedar Point's coasters are open every day, and you can be sure that the maximun needed number of trains will also be on track. Their ride ops nail the loading process andstill manage to be friendly. You have to pull teeth for this level of service at other parks, for CP it seems to come natural.

People always complain that CP is voted best park every year, why I don't know. I've not read *one* valid arguement as to why this park falls short, and I never will.

I'm with others in saying...ugh the Beast lost.

I agree. Not so much about collossos, but the fact that I had to vote for one of the new woodies when I haven't ridden ANY of them. I just picked Cornball Express because it sounded like a good choice.

Jeff, perhaps next year you should add a choice of "OTHER" or "SKIP" or "N/A" or something along those lines. That would give the people an opportunity to cast valid votes.

I've traded in my 2000 Giovanola for a 2002 Arrow X4D :)
My other car is now an Arrow X4D!

I can't tell you all how happy I am to see GhostRider top the Beast! :)

GR rules!

LoadedG,

To skip, you could just simply not answer any. That question was one that I skipped.

And heck yes, GhostRider RULES! Beast = Nice, long ride; but I'm into more intense and insane ride... and GhostRider fits that nicely! And it's won, w0000000t!

I was pretty sure that X would win the number one spot. But was shocked with Cedar Point beating out Six Flags Magic Mountian.

YEAH Ghostrider! My baby has finally won! MUAHAHA!

No surprise with Cedar Point- @ least half of CBuzz lives in Ohio, I think- it didn't add anything, that truly shows some biaism (is that even a word? If it is, I meant it to be a form of biast, you pervs!) It'll never change- if CP didn't build a ride for 6 years, it would still be tops.

The Ghost With The Most finally has it all!

X looks like a great steel, and its so crazy- definetly more deserving by looks and technology and all that mumbo-jumbo than any of the other steelies.

Ghostrider kicks ARSE!

Twisted Rails did a good job on X, but they aren't doing as good a job on Xcellerator coverage. I personally think Westcoaster should have won that category for its good X coverage and Xcellent Xcellerator construction. No offense Karl.

GHOSTRIDER RULES!

As chris implied, I don't believe many who voted for Colossus really rode it- I personally voted for Cheetah...

Ghostrider all the way....

BGW's got good food, no surprise...

YEAH GHOSTIE!

Guess that's all...

Did I mention, I love Ghostrider?!:) My little woodie...:)

If they’re running, I’ll get ‘em. If they’re not, they should be.

I wouldn't vote for CP as the Best Park for the same reason I wouldn't vote for IOA or BGW as Best Park. And maybe not SFMM or SFGAdv when I ride these types of coasters there either. I'll just have to see. They're my favorite type of ride in the park, so I would notice if they seemed to be missing. BS is only like half of Racer to me.

The results are not slanted to Ohio. In fact, only 11% of our traffic originates from Ohio and Michigan combined. In fact, the largest region is from the mid-Atlantic, at 25%.
