Worlds of Adventure neighbors: Not in my backyard

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

Six Flags Worlds of Adventure near Cleveland wants to build a 200-foot coaster, but it's going to be a battle with the neighbors.

The park recently approached the city of Aurora's zoning officials about building a coaster on the former Sea World side of the park, where they were not previously permitted to build rides.

Why not build it over the lake. Just make the footers to go all the way to the bottom of the lake. Then have the supports above sea level. Then everyone could be happy.:)

Some of the neighbors were there before there was a Sea World., and some were there before Sea World sold out and Six Flags saw the land as an opportunity to expand the number of rides it has. I think the neighbors have a legitimate concern. It may sound cool to have a coaster in your backyard, but trains full of screaming coaster riders zooming past every few minutes until 9 or 10 or whenever the park closes? That could get annoying.
They moved next to an amusement park!! What do they expect??!! If you move next to an airport, do you expect to not hear planes? I lived by one for over 12 years, and after 2 weeks, it didnt bother me, GET OVER IT!!

The noise isn't the real issue, it's property value. That's a tricky thing, because on one hand, no one wants to live next to an amusement park so buying a house there wouldn't go over well. On the other hand, you can't sell your property to commercial developers unless the zoning is changed. You're pretty much screwed either way.

I have a feeling some people post without reading the conversation we've been having...does anyone else get that vibe?
I would *****love**** to live next to SFWoA.
walking distance... no $9 parking charges....
hell, I would pay $20,000 more for the house!!

Actually you are wrong. If you read the article you would notice that the people who are complaining are those who live near the wild life side which until this year was Sea World. Occasionally hearing Shamu splash and a crowd cheer is much different from hearing a roller coaster running from 9am to 10pm every day. These people moved near a marine sanctuary not a thrill ride park.
Well, the way SFWoA runs its coasters, the neighbors won't be hearing too much noise anyway! ;)

Joe, who is semi-joking, as SFWoA is doing so much better at operations this year than last.

A few comments:

They can't build the coaster on the old Geauga Lake side because the town of Bainbridge (which SFWOA lies in) has more strict codes than does the city of Aurora.

The can't build out into the lake. If I recall correctly, and it has been a while, Geauga Lake lake is very deep. In fact, I thought I heard that the exact depth has never been measured b/c it is so deep. You won't be putting footers in there.

Finally, CPGEnius...you are right!

Deep? Have you ever seen how fast that lake freezes? Besides, Batman and Serial Thriller are already partially in the lake.

Jeff, well then I don't know what the real measurment is on the lake. A captain at SFWoA said it is REALLY deep? Around 1,000ft. + he said.

But I don't get it? Maybe someone else can help? :)

The lake freezes over quickly because there is very little movement. However, it does not freeze solid from top to bottom.

Batman and Serial Thriller are on the edges of the lake but I know they cannot go out very far.

A thousand feet? He was lying or making something up. The lake freezes quickly because it's shallow, movement has nothing to do with it. The shallower the body of water the faster it will freeze.

Easiest way to know for sure is to call the county...they probably have the stats. But back in the 80's when I worked there I was told by several full time people that divers could not find the bottom and that other ways of measuring could not determine the depth either.

I seriously wonder how much the property value of the nieghbors has raised/declined over the past 3 years....
I read once that Six Flags Worlds of Adventure wanted to make a "deep diving submarine Nautilus ride", so maybe Geauga Lake is at least somewhat deep. Regardless, if they do make the coaster on the Wildlife side, I hope it is marine themed to coincide with its location.
