Worlds of Adventure neighbors: Not in my backyard

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

Six Flags Worlds of Adventure near Cleveland wants to build a 200-foot coaster, but it's going to be a battle with the neighbors.

The park recently approached the city of Aurora's zoning officials about building a coaster on the former Sea World side of the park, where they were not previously permitted to build rides.

I agree, these people lived next to Sea World, until this year. The most noise that comes from sea world was the cheering of and audience or the shows coming over the loudspeaker. They lived next to a sea park, not an amusement park so they have the right to complain.

If six flags wants that land for rollercoasters, buy out the neighbors like they bought out sea world imo.
Maybe they can't get it. They have beening getting a coaster every year! Six Flags needs to focus on other parks like SFEG, KK, and the other park that havn't been named Six Flags.

I think that if these neighbors don't back down, SF Inc. is going to make them an offer they can't refuse. Most likely that offer will be mere pocket change compared to what they have spent. Employee Housing anyone?;)

I'm thinkin they will either get a monster woodie or a steel hypercoaster. Either way it would be disguistingly sweet
XFlighter,
some people just don't want that coaster to be there. There are still some of them who were there before Seaworld was built. Rollercoasters do make noise even if it does have B&M quietness. And those people will loose money eventually because their property value will go down.

A number of parks are near housing areas. One is Kennywood. Houses are very near the park and pretty close to Phantoms' Revenge. KW doesn't have a 200 foot+ coaster in theory, but its still pretty big. SP closed at 10 every night because of noise from the chain. That is really the only part of a coaster you can hear besides the roar of the trains, which aren't that frequent or defined unless you get a B&M.

maybe the neighbors are cedar point fans.
The bigger problem these people will contend with is the decrease in their property values...which most of you don't have to worry about yet.

A home is supposed to increase in value, not decrease. I suspect that if a 200 foot coaster was placed in my backyard, suddenly my house wouldn't be worth quite as much. To me, that is the bigger issue and I think the neighbors have a legitimate complaint.

the thing i would say with these complaining neighbors that say not in my backyard. the VERY first question i would to all the complainers would be "When did you move here?". If its anytime after park opened. I would say live with it you moved here the park was here first you knew there may be a possible high amount of thrill-rides. if you dont like this move then.

Listen, you don't know there situation at all. Mabey that housing is in a nice area, mabey it is all they can afford. Alot of 'yall need to know that the world doesn't revolve around coasters, or what you think. I am done:)

WHy not just put the new coaster on the Wild side?
So...the rumor is an Intamin, 200 ft, and maybe a bigger drop, due to a valley or ravine or whatever.

Of course, all of this is just a guess, but let's think about a few things...

1) Millennium Force will be hard to beat.
2) What is Cedar Point's "weak spot" ? A good wooden coaster.
3) Intamin makes wood coasters.
4) What is PKI's strong point ? Good wooden coasters.
5) What could SFWoA do to one up both CP and PKI ?

Could it be a hyper terrain woodie ?
It sure would fit into the "wildside" theme more than a steel coaster would too. Let's cross our fingers... :)

AHHHH...this story brings back fond memories of a now long gone amusement park in Queens, NY. It was NO CP but it had a nice assortment of rides, including my fav, Jumbo Jet, as well as a huge arcade and a restaurant. As the years past the neighbors continued to complaint CONSTANTLY about all the "noise" this amusement park created.
Finally those whiners got their wish, first the rides themselves closed down (but sat idle for YEARS-it was SOO depressing) and eventually the arcade and restaurant did too. Now there is a Pepsi factory where it once stood.
Interesting note here:
"The neighbors continued to complain CONSTANTLY about the all the "noise".....
1- this amusement park was RIGHT along the Long Island Expressway
2- this amusement park was directly under a flight pattern for LaGuardia airport
3- across the street from this amusement park was a small/private airport that small planes took off/landed at constantly
Of course my po!nt here is .... WHERE in the borough of Queens is it QUIET anyway??????
I dont think I would mind a roller coaster in my neighborhood where I live now, but thats just ME!
Just remember not EVERYONE is an amusement park freak!!

When the floor's gone, so are you-see you back here in 2 32!!
wahoo skipper, is exactly right. He pretty much reiterated what I said before...but better. If they put in a coaster right next to their property, it will decrease its property value and will scare away people that might want to buy the land if there wasn't a coaster.

Not to mention the noise factor. Many of these people were there before the days of Sea World...they have a right to complain.
I think it will be very unlikely for a wooden coaster like people are saying. They just built Villain 2 years ago and a 200 ft. woodie for Six Flags doesnt look likely. I think there is a chance it might be a ride that another Six Flags has now. That seems to be the case with Six Flags, several parks get rides at the same time such as Deja Vu is going to two. But I think it would be better if they got an original coaster like they did last year (Batman Knight Flight, Villain, and Superman). Definately B&M or Intamin though.
They can complain.....but in the end I think the ammusement park will win....the bigger parks will win, while the smaller parks don't have the money to back it up.

I heard from a reliable souce ( I'll find out just how reliable when Cedar Point and SFWoA annouce their plans) that is was going to be 235 feet.
"Yesterday, While waiting in line for the Aroura Bell. Some Old employee was giving trivia to me and my friend. But then he asked... "Does anyone know why those cranes are over thier on the othwer side of the lake" And me and him both said New Coaster. And He said no, but then he did say, How tall is the new coaster going to be, we said 200ft!. He said to us, its actually going to be 223ft and be made by a manufacturer in Holland. And after that he said the Big I. If you put these facts together it might be a 223ft Hyper, made by Intamin AG?"

Holland... That would be Vekoma. Hmmm... A TILT hyper? Just a guess :)

LOL, well actually I knew the cranes were not for the new coaster yet, ;). Anyways yes he did tell all the people waiting for the Aurora Belle. And of course I kept winning the trivia questions. :)

You didn't hear it from me...but the hyper coster might bring a new concept to hyper coaster designs. Think Dueling Dragons...

Thank you for not feeding the trolls and enjoy the rest of your day, here at CoasterBuzz.com. CLEAR!
Intamin isn't based out of Holland. Are there any dutch ride manufacturer's that begin with I?

Either way, Six Flags owns enough land in that area that they ought to be able to squeeze that new ride in without it coming so close to the residential neighbors. Upsetting the locals isn't going to get them anywhere.
