I know this isnt a popular opinion at all but I am going to have to say the Demon at SFGAm. The reason I say this is because if you sit in the back seat this drop just grabs your stomach. It is a short drop (About 90 ft) but your whole body flies forward againt the OTSR. If this coaster just had a lap bar you would hit your face on the front of the train. Short hill but intense!!!!

i would have to say magnums drop is the best but that will probably change after i ride mf.
Raging Bull has my favorite first drop ever. For second place, although it's not very steep, Stealth's first drop is amazing!
ChiTown: I agree with the Demons first drop. Maybe not the best ever, but definitely worth a ride. Especially with its location, being dwarfed by Raging Bull and the American Eagle, one would not expect the punch it gives. I only wish that they had made Shockwave's 1st drop like that rather than the airless "Traver style" drop (if it deserves the title drop).
I know not many people will get a chance to check out this coaster, but the first drop from the back seat on Rampage (Visionland in Alabama) is the single most exciting element of any of the 120 or so coasters I've ridden. It actually gets more frightening each time you ride, as you anticipate being FLUNG down the hill with a force that I've not felt even on turbo drops. To me, the drop not only blows away any other woodie. but any steel as well, at least of those I've checked out (which includes MF, Magnum, Raptor, Riddler's Revenge, Appollo's Chariot, etc.)

I'd have to say Millennium Force too, just for the sheer power of the drop....throw ya over the hill and never look back, it's great. Close runner up is SROS at SFNE cause it drops you into a misty underground tunnel.
Natalie "SROS is still my #1 though" Villani
Millennium Force, Millennium Force, Millennium Force. The trim brakes totaly ruin the Mean Streak's first drop!!!!!
Change of oppinion on steel coasters, Millenium Force all the way!!!!!

As for steel coasters I would have to say nothing beats the thrills of Magnum and Chang. Wooden... probably the first hill of Beast. I would love it if the second hill was the same kind of awesome drop.

We are the ones who wait in line for hours for a 45-second thrill, and consider it time well spent.
outside seats on bkf. serious twisting! vertical drop would be magnum or villain, but i havent ridden mf yet!

Since no one mentioned Son of Beast, I'm going to mention it. For a wooden coater with that kind of drop, it has to be the best first drop over any wooden coaster. You are dropping at 214ft. at a 57 or 58 degree angle. That's steeper than the Vortex for a comparison.
As for a steel coaster drop that would be Gemini at CP. When I first rode it the drop took my breath away, because I didn't excpect it to be that steep.

I don't understand people who want to get rid of SFMM Psyclone. That ride was sweet. The drop was nuts the way it did that funny banking thing.
Oh yeah, and Gemini's not wood. It's steel :)

aIrtIme'S ovErRaTed..
I would have to say the Steel Phantom's first drop. It's not long or steep but very intense when you sit in the back seat.
And for wooden I would have to say Thunderbolt.
Since I haven't been on MF yet, (4 more weeks), I'll say Goliath's 255 ft. drop. into a tunnel at 61 degrees and 85 mph is the best so far. It's my second hypercoaster and it's awesome because you almost hit your head flying through the tunnel. The drop has great airtime and weightlessness.

Spewey,
regarding the 120 ft range drops...
check out the villain! its probably my favorite after the the subtle differences ive seen thispast week. you gotta check it out.!
My favorite woody is a tie between the Georgia Cyclone (SFoGeorgia) and the Screaming Eagle (SFSt.L). The Georgia Cyclone has an amazing fist drop that always takes my breath away, I don't recover until about a second before the second drop witch dives under the fist drop at a perpindicular angle (the trims are on the third hill so the ride stinks from there on out) I rode it several times without trims, and in my opion it is the finest wooden twister out there. Steel would have to be the Kumba, all that anticipation while you climb up the first hill, through the loop and then you dive off with a twist, the loop just gets bigger the closer you get to it, it is truly amazing.
Yeah, I forgot about that killer first drop on the Georgia Cyclone. Great coaster!
And Ron G - I have ridden the Villain. I enjoyed it, but ... my favorite thing is airtime, and I thought it lacked a little. My other (more serious) complaint is the "staple" lap bars - with laterals that intense, those bars have to be padded all the way to the floor or your legs are gonna hurt. And mine did. When I was in line for the Legend at Holiday World, and saw that it used the staples as well, I let out a groan. I thought that ride suffered from them as well. I really hope that system does not catch on.

The greatest drop ever on any coaster for me is Oblivion at Alton Towers, it may not be that high but it sure scares the hell out of you. It is just such a rush dropping face first into a pitch black hole filled with steam. WOW
Im gonna have to say the Millenium Force, you just can't beat 310 feet and 80 degrees its just surreal, the Magnum comes awful close though. My personal favorite wooden drop is the Texas Giant at SFOT
For wood: The CONEY ISLAND CYCLONE has the best first drop with its single lap bar and bench seat what a great drop.
For Steel: The MONTU has such power and G's it's and ubelievable first drop.
But I'm sure Millenium Force's first drop will be my favorite in a couple of months.
