Woodies: a fine line between out of control & pain

I wouldn't mind rough coasters at all if the padding was adequate. Speaking of Big Dippers, the one here in San Diego has some fairly rough moments. Durn near busted a spleen a coupla times. I'd go more often if there was more padding.

But hands down, the roughest coaster I've ever been on wasn't wooden. Any guesses? Here's a hint, it's been all around the country, but in now stashed away in the corner of a large park here in California.

You guessed it, "Smash-yer-back".

Till around late 80's The Beast at Kings Isand had no padding at all. Back then The Beast had to be the roughest coaster on the planet.
I've ridden steels that were more rough than the Ozark Wildcat... talk about smooth.

The Worst ride I have ever been on is the Mind Eraser at SFWoA that ride kills your head, but I havent been to SFWoA in a few years (too busy at CP).

And here I was thinking this was a topic about woodies.

I agree with the one that said that the Georgia Cyclone is a painful ride, although it has some of the best drops of any woodie that I have been on.

I am pretty fussy about the woodies....they need to be smooth, fast, and full of airtime. If they are too rough I can only ride them once or twice. There are some woodies I can do over and over (Lightning Racer, Screechin Eagle, and the Beast and Shivering Timbers on their good days) Others I just can't do more than once at a time.

What can I say? I prefer pleasure over pain. :-)

The same goes for the 80's steel Arrow Headbangers. I will try anything that is new to me, if I like it I will do it again. If it bangs my temples to where the pain overpowers the ride experience I probably won't do it again for a while.

Then there are the Headbangers like the Vortex at PKI, which was tolerable when it first opened 18 years ago. In the last 8 years or so I have had VERY good rides and VERY bad rides.

The SOB has improved quite a bit this year IMHO, but most of the time I can only tolerate it once or twice in a day.

'sall good. Great minds think alike! ;)

PS...yours is better. Also, you should consider changing Jeff's quote to: "Now I'm pissed!" ;)

I'll classify the four Texas wooden coasters.

Painful Fun- Texas Cyclone

Painful Crap- Texas Giant, Judge Roy Scream

Not bad, but no forces - Rattler

Maybe I just hit the SFOT woodies on a bad day (Lone Star Coasterthon) but I would hated them.

Arrow, even the straight parts of our coasters hurt.

I find mean streak boring. Hercules at Dorney Park is rough especailly (spelling) with the brakes. Thunderbolt at KP is a good woody along with an underated coaster the racer. I personally like the out and back style like bluestreak at CP or The Coaster (ThunderHawk) at dorney park.

A fun pain I find is on RWB at WoA.. Lots of people say its the roughest woodie ever and whatnot.. Yea RIGHT! The ride is fun, its nowhere as rough as other ones.. If people find it so painful, they go home! Its not that bad now... lol

I will say i used to ride Wolf Bobs repeatedly just because it was SO bad, same goes for IW. They hurt so terribly you have to ride.

Sort of like when something smells bad, what do you do? Why take a deeper sniff of course.

Yeah, I would say you hit them on a wrong day... I mean, you did say the Giant was "painful crap" and Rattler was "not bad"....

Am I really that shy?

I clearly haven't ridden as many coasters as the rest of you, but I do know that I rode Shivering Timbers several times recently and it was virtually painless. At the same time, it seemed to be running very fast with tons of air-time. Maybe they found a good formula?
Sometimes rough can be fun, sometimes painful (cough...Hercules...cough). It would definately help the woodies such as Hercules if the parks would use manufacturer padding.
