Witness says ride operators at fault in Six Flags New England death

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

A woman sitting behind Stanley Mordarsky Saturday on Six Flags New England's Superman tried to hold on to Mordarsky when he fell out of the ride to his death on its final turn. Witnesses say that the ride operators did not check restraints after a shuffling of seats, and that Mordarsky's lap bar was not pushed down to its fully closed position.

In related news, Six Flags Darien Lake will not open its Superman roller coaster until the investigation in New England has been completed. Read more from WOKR/Rochester.

Ok, as far as sensors on the trains go, I just learned that the B&M hypers have sensors that can tell if they are lowered far enough.

Coastingthru, I'm not sure about SFNE's Superman. I'll do some research.

I learn something new everyday.

well thanks Rihard! i'd be curious to know if it was just something the operator noticed that day or if there really is a sensor. cause if there is, its further proof that this is an accident that NEVER should have happened.

also, after reading the report on what happened, coasterbud's acct of the person being in the right side of the 2nd car is incorrect. seems kinda sick to me to try to pretend to be a witness to a horrible event that the true witnesses wish they had missed. guess it takes all kinds...

I want to say that to coasterbud I saw the exact same thing you saw. He was in the right side of the train.. I was also waiting in line for the last seat in the train, about to go on in 3 rides I think. I thought that I was crazy or seeing something wrong after everybody else said it was the left side (though, yes I guess it doesn't make an entire world of difference, it's just the fact that it's false information that bothers me). I could have sworn I looked over the entire train front to back to find the empty seat, because my friends were on that train, and that was the only one.

Are we ever going to actually find out if that was the seat... and further more some actual facts as to what really happend. I don't care if these people say they were supposedly eyewitnesses. They're giving false information.

Thank you "left right." Its good to know that others exist out there who do not believe everything they read...even if it is documented in a report. I too have since read the report and would love to see the "ride photo" that shows him in that Front Left seat. Until I do, I will not believe that he was anywhere other than where I indicated before.

To "CoastingThru"...I'm sorry that you feel "it takes all kinds." I don't know what you feel I would have to gain by making up such a story or even placing myself at the scene of such a tragic accident. If I could turn back the clock and remove myself from seeing such an event, I promise you...I WOULD. I have not been able to get the vision of the poor man lying lifeless on the ground, out of my head for the past week.

I was only trying to give insight to what I felt was misinformation being reported about this event. Believe it or not "Coasting Thru", not everything you read is the truth.

To "left right", I thank you for collaborating my story. There are more of us out there who saw as we did.

Regardless of what happened, I don't want to lose sight of what is important here...the fact that a man lost his life...and it should never have happened. It is a tragedy that I know I (and I'm sure most of us) will never forget.

What I don't understand is why RoS at Darien Lake is closed...Hey I saw a car accident on the road the other day involving a Chevy- now everyone who drives a Chevy can't drive their car until the investigation on the car crash is complete?! yeah right- Especially if even "Six Flags Management" err... Premier Parks management with new name tags...is saying it was rider error- just because these two rides are clones- there are several rides with the same lap bars, restraints, and brakes and they haven't closed- anyone know why just this one coaster (located in a park where it is the only coaster that is not found in 30 other parks- boomerang & mind eraser; over 20 years old- Viper; or the worst wooden coaster ever built- pred)

Any word- we need our "only" real coaster back!

i used to work at SFDL as a ride op, and was trained on superman... i guess there was an incident where when the ride came to a stop on or before the platform where some overweight guy fell out due to the force of the ride stopping and his weight not holding him in... all i know is that after that if we had any question as to wether a person was too overweight to be able to ride, we had these little plastic measuring sticks, like 2 or 3 inches long, when we push the bar down, the length between the bar and the seat or some part of the coaster i cant remember, had to be shorter, if we couldnt push it down far enough we had to tell the person they were too big to ride...

problem comes in, try to tell someone that's been waiting in line for 2 hours that they're too big to ride... you wanna see an irate park guest... they also put a coaster car with operating seat restraints at the beginning of the line i believe which showed how far the bar had to be able to come down, in order to properly restrain... no doubt it in SFNE it was the ride ops who were at fault for not being more cautious... but SF will take the fall...

also there are no real sensors on the lap bars as far as i know, only thing i can remember that has sensors is the queue line bars (which are hydrolically operated) at SFDL anyways... the op at the control panel is usually high up enough to be able oversee the whole train and you can tell if someone's bar isnt' down all the way pretty easily, also the train isnt released without 2 or 3 ride ops total hitting a release button i know there's at least one at the rear maybe two (one for each side) and main control op, all signaling with thumbs up and holding down buttons simultaneously until the train has left the station.
i feel deeply for this man and it must have been traumatizing for this man throughout the ride...
