Why hug it when I could cut it down for profit? ;)
How do you manage that?

You know, I was "watching" while all of that was going on, I thought Lord G musta had a *three-martini lunch*...;)
Sometimes I'll edit my stuff three or four times before it "takes", and missing the edit/quote button makes it more interesting....of course, giving me the ability to edit OTHERS' posts, that would just be irresposnsible...;)
If it only happens once every 3700 posts, then I'm doing ok. ;)
I am no saint, but I took special care when buying a car so that it fit my needs. It gets great gas milage and I can still fill it up with stuff.
We are heading straight into another gas crisis like we had in the 70s, cars have been getting bigger and bigger, gas prices have been rising, and now the oil wells we depend on to fill our oversized tanks are on fire. If I didnt have a mountain to climb to get home I would ride my bike to work more often.
Stuey, one reason why they plant more than they harvest is that they are removing huge ancient trees and replacing one old one with several smaller ones. They know they're coming back to harvest those trees once they are big enough and those trees won't ever grow as big as the ones cut down. For anybody who spends any amount of time in the woods it's evident when you are in a 'replanted' forest. And they still leave entire hillsides devoid of any vegetation at all which creates several problems for local ecosystems. As an environmental attorney I have far more compelling industries to combat, but the timber industry isn't an angel.

Dave, I only work 2 minutes from home so that helps :)
Not to mention most of the places I go that are remotely far away, I fly because I hate driving long distances.

2. Add up ALL of your automobile expenses over a year and figure out how much it costs. You might save a few hundred or even over a thousand on fuel if the vehicle stayed parked in your driveway or garage all year long. But you'd still be paying insurance, registration, license fees, you'd still need to change the oil every so often even if you hardly ever move the car, etc., etc.
3. Europeans pay much more for gas than Americans because 75-80 percent of the price is taxes. I suppose that pays for all that "free" stuff they have over there that we don't have here.
4. I just read that, when adjusted for inflation, gas prices in the early 80's were still higher than they are today. They'd be the equivalent of $3.00 or more a gallon.
5. Repeat Item 1.
SHHHHHH! Don't say that too loud and give Governor Rendell (PA) any NEW ideas. But then again... already happening here. Raise taxes and "fees" in all of Pennsylvania so the (finacially dying) public transportation systems in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh don't have to raise their fees a single nickle.
How do you define too wasteful? The more trees we use, the more are planted because the demand for more trees becomes necessary. Timber companies plant way more trees than they use. Why would a timber company want to destroy their most valuable asset? I am originally from northern Louisiana and there is a museum in my town that shows pictures of the landscape back in the late 1800's. It looked like western Kansas..now the entire area is nothing but trees. That is true for most of the South. Just take a flight from Dallas to S. Carolina sometime. It's 90% trees. I'm all for old growth preservation and I disagree with cutting those down. Everyone focuses on the 1% of land that is temporarily clear cut and not the other 99%. There are more trees now in North America than almost
any time in history. This is a little off topic, but it's a good illustration. You can take every man, woman and child on Earth, place them in the state of TX and each person would have 1200 square feet to themselves.
