Why the extra spaces?

I have this problem from time to time. I write a post and it starts out normally and then, partway through, it forces a double space between lines.

See here for an example:

Sure, the world has bigger fish to fry, but this irks me and it messes with the cleanliness of the forums.

If you hit shift+enter at the same time you will get single spacing instead of double.

I'm glad you like it clean. :)

Yeah, shift-enter is the key. I'm trying to find a way to trap the enter key in IE for the next version, or I should say I plan to look for a way. In Firefox (with next version) it does a single line break.

So that's the secret!
Wow, I thought it was common knowledge on how to do single spacing?
I guess not everyone knew.
Oh well...
;)
I just use the plain text box. That way I'm in control of what gets posted.

Is it really that hard to add your own tags around your words? ;)

I also write HTML and PHP in Notepad. But that's another story.

So I'm not the only one? Wow. So am I also not alone in thinking Frontpage generates quite possibly the ugliest code anywhere? ;)

Steve, who realizes this is not on topic...

Real developers use Visual Studio 2005. :)

Frontpage is still around? ;)

BBedit is the best editor I have found for PHP and HTML in the notepad style.

Why is it that MSIE likes to be so difficult? I personally have stopped supporting it with my personal project sites. Firefox is really a great way to go. Safari (for mac) is good too, I am using it right now.

Guess who's back? Back Again? James K's back. Tell a friend.

This is getting way off topic, but who cares. I once considered stopping writing code for IE, but then I realized: well over 75% of internet users still browse with it, so maybe I should keep dealing with its shortfalls. ;)

Jeff, Visual Studio 2005? I once coded in Visual Basic, maybe that counts for something? Mind you this was VB5 and VB6, not even VB.NET... :)

I messed around with VB6 back in the day. I know it served a purpose, but what a horrible platform in terms of creating structured code that performed well. VB.NET has little in common with VB6 and earlier other than a slightly similar syntax.

VS2005 is technically still in beta, but it's a much better IDE than the previous versions for Web development. The older versions tended to change your HTML at times and just didn't have as rich of a feature set as 2005.

TextWrangler is a nice free alternative, and you don't lose any of the features that aid in PHP coding.

So wait, Coasterbuzz isn't completely hand-coded?

For shame! ;)

It's not script either... it's compiled! This particular site was actually coded mostly with the beta of VS 2002 in 2001 (did you get that?), which made some pretty ugly HTML. You still find people that find it a badge of honor to write HTML entirely by hand, but I'd rather spend that time writing code. Part of the reason I don't ever change anything now is because I don't want to break anything. I had no idea what the hell I was doing back then.

VS 2005 not only creates valid XHTML, but it also has "Intellisene everywhere," so you can begin to type the first few characters of everything and then hit tab and it will fill it in. It's pretty amazing. Huge time saver.

Mmm, I like intellisense. :) Perhaps Coasterbuzz could have it in the post box. You know, I type "Six" and it gives me a list of all the parks or rides beginning with Six. ;)

I wouldn't say it's a badge of honor for me to write the HTML, I guess I've never used a program like VS to know how it is. I'm kind of weary of stuff like that because I had a rotten experience with Frontpage (I know, they're not the same thing). I also mainly use PHP, so I don't think VS can help me there either. *** Edited 8/22/2005 2:19:47 PM UTC by MarimbaGuy87***

I'm starting to regret starting this topic! You all lost me by the 6th post.

Am I the *only* one who missed the computer train?

No, I live in Central Pennsylvania. You'd be surprised to see the ratio of people who "got on the train" to those that think a mouse is what you get in your basement in the fall.

Steve, who knows that a mouse can also be what you get in your basement... ;)

Well don't tell them that, because they'll probably mention that it hasn't been RTM'd yet.
