What, since when does wood not shrink when it is cold? Compare your deck in the summer to the winter. Big difference there. Wooden and Steel coaster's both shrink in the cold. Why do you think we have an off season?

Actually the reason for a off season is because no GP in thier right mind would go to a park while it is snowing.

But, shrinkage has little to do with why coasters don't run well in the cold. The major problem for any coaster is the change in viscosity of the lubricants. Coasters are very sensitive to this. Just try the first ride of the day on a chilly morning and you'll feel like the coaster is a slug. Then, come back in the afternoon and you'll find the ride much faster.
