Why don't they rebuild Crystal Beach Cyclone?

Wouldn't it be great if a park built a recreation of the Crystal Beach Cyclone. It was the most terifying ride on earth. I would love to ride it. With modern safety equipment the ride would be safe too. I'm guessing someone has the plans to the original. Would you drive many many hours to ride the Cyclone if a recreation was built? I would!

I believe, if I recall correctly, that ride was incredibly painful, and because of the design, the accidents were un-avoidable. If it were modified (the design I mean), than I'm sure it'd be great.

I don't think it was the design. It might have been the trains. They don't look too comfortable.

Put TA2K cars on the Cyclone!
It was the design. Look at it, or any of the Traver coasters, and you will see what I mean.

Actually, I read that the CB Cyclone had a perfect safety record, as far as accidents go, that is. Nobody ever died on the ride. There were many cases of whiplash, cracked or broken ribs, and fainting, but no deaths.

I agree with Coasting_Ohio, I think that modern design and building techniques could recreate the CB Cyclone. It would not be exactly the same but anything close would be awesome. I think GCI could do it justice. If I owned a park, that would be my first woodie!

Actually, someone did die on the Cyclone. They flew out of the car when they were standing and landed on the tracks below, and got ran over by the same train they were on.
A catastrophe like that could be avoided with well placed emergency brake, and better restraints.

I agree with Soggy and Coasting Ohio it would be great for some to recreate this ride. I think that GCI could do a great job rebuilding that, and the Millenium Flyers trains would be perfect for the ride. I would have loved to ride the original. Lets hope maybe someday it'll happen. Knoebels Grove maybe. They like to recreate the classics.

Coasting_Ohio, you are right, I stand corrected...

You (I, in this case) learn something new every day!

Even though that deah is tragic, people seem to think that the CB Cyclone was involved in many more than that one death. And as you point out, it was due to rider error (standing on the ride).

Although I wish it could be recreated in wood, I tihnk steel would do better for that track layout.

Coasters- a little slice of heaven
My god, many people have died @ disney parks.

"....was crushed to death under the wheels of the People Mover. His body was dragged a few hundred feet..."

that's nasty.

Actually, Badnitrus did a really spectacular job on re-creating the layout of the Crystal Beach Cyclone at http://badnitrus.danimation.com/Cyclone/Cyclone.htm . It really shows how excellent the layout was, including an old animation that he had on it.

If CCI or some other wooden coaster company could re-create this classic, it would become just that... a true classic. They may need to make the overall layout a little larger due to the wikidly sharp turns and banking to prevent any whiplash or injuries, but it can be done...

The only problem is...
-- Who wants it?
-- Who would build it?
-- Who, high up the corporate ladder in the amusement industry is even thinking it?
If I recall reading somewhere, Traver built it with no straight track other that part of the brakes and part of the lift. One hellofa ride! :)

If memory serves I though the Georgia Cyclone at SFOG was supposed to be fashioned after the Coney Island Cyclone. Anyone know any info on this?

You build it, I'll ride it...eventually
1) If wood ain't strong enough, use steel painted to look like it. ;)
2) Have continuous steel rails rather than the usual woodie rails.
3) Again, use TA2K cars with rubber aircraft tyres for a smoooooth ride.
4) Get B&M to perfect the dynamics so that no whiplash/neck etc injuries occur.

There you go.

I believe the original had a steel structure with wooden track.

The one fatality was due to rider error (standing up). The broken ribs seem to me to be caused by the fact that there were no seat dividers and limited restraints, thereby increasing the chance of injury around the tight laterals - especially if riding with a larger passenger.

I think with proper trains and restraints, the original design could be utilized and still be safe.

The real question is how extreme would it seem to us today, especially compared to some of the modern coaster designs and inverts. My hope would be that it would still be one heck of a ride, as it seems to be from watching the Badnitrus animation. Now someone just needs to build it. It's first on my list if I hit the lottery.
Traver's Cyclones were rough, even by 1920's standards. They became "oncers". Even more so they beat themselves to pieces. I believe PTC reworked at least the CB Cyclone before the decision was made to dismantle it. All of the Traver Cyclones were torn down due to extremely high maintenance costs and low ridership.

Actually I think most the Cyclone at SF parks used the same layout although heights and other slight things were changed from the original.

Im sure B&M or Vekome or even Mack could manage to recreate it out of steel with not to many changes made to it, While we are at it lets talk about rebuilding the Airplane too

You might as well add the Long Beach Cyclone Racer to that list.

Wouldn't the CB Cyclone be a maintenance nightmare with the extreme sharp turns and drops? I would think the trains would tear up the track faster than let's say an out an back woodie.
