Whizzer to be saved, Shockwave takes the fall

Posted | Contributed by Draegs

Six Flags Great America has decided not to removed the 26-year-old Whizzer. Apparently, public outcry was too strong and plans have been haulted. The park has decided to remove the park's Arrow looper, Shockwave, instead.

Why were so many people against the removal of Drachen Fire but so many are for the removal of Shockwave? Are the rides really that different?

Well Chi about that wall thing, it was ALWAYS my impression that the wall was only there because of the Deja Vu construction. I was NEVER under the impression that it was going to be a permanent fixture in the park. Of course, I also didnt visit in 2001 so I dont know how 'formidible' the structure was.

I wish I could blindly believe that they really are that responsive to the public, but then I wouldnt be me :)

I think its more of a better balance of coasters ApolloAndy. This park to my knowledge is the only one around that has 2 Arrow loopers (Demon and Shockwave). So to remove the less popular one would make the most sense. This will also add more variety to the park.

Ric Flair was hitting on the female host, he told her - "Space Mountain may be the oldest ride in the park, but it has the longest line." WOOOOO!

No, I believe Drachen Fire was just as painful if not worse than ShockWave.

I don't know, but maybe because Drachen Fire probably bashed the brains out of some people into help saving it from its own demise? Who knows?

Well Hostyl. They didnt just throw up a chain link fence for a quick fix. It was a tall solid green wall that appeared permanent looking to me.

But I do see your point about DV. Who knows?

Thats horrible! I love Arrow and some of you seem happy, Well this goes to show all of you who were saying, oh dont make a petition, its too late, or Six Flags doesnt care about customers...Well WRONG!

Okay, so it's okay for Jazzland to get a used coaster, but if we were to get one it's not okay? Where is your logic?

Amazing. I have much more respect for Six Flags now. This one thing may have turned my opinions around. I am wondering, could they have been planning this all the time? (AKA, pulling a Kennywood ;) )

They should just move Whizzer to the parking lot where Shockwave was and use the original land they planned for the new attractin.
sorry to burst everyones little bubble but i highly doubt they are saving whizzer bc of the save the whizzer campaigns. i dont even know if i believe this. maybe both will be taken out. and honestly i can say thats fine by me.

So as of right now, Shockwave is down forever? I'm glad to see that Whizzer is staying. I signed a Whizzer petition thinking that Six Flags was set in their ways. I'm pretty amazed.

LOL. That cracked me up bad. hahahaha.

Six Flags Inc.

August 16, 2002 --

Six Flags Inc. announced today that their AstroWorld park located in Houston, TX will unveil one of the largest looping steel roller coasters in the world for its 2003 season.

The towering ride, peaking out at 170', will turn thrillseekers head-over-heels up to seven times at speeds approaching 65 miles-per-hour! Not only will

What I don't seem to understand is why they are removing a Coaster at all they have more than enough parking Space - If they can Move the coaster back behind the American Eagle Helix, it would Save a Coaster and Bump up their Number instead of keeping it the same... duh

Good, that makes it official-- straight from the mouth of a park rep.
SIX FLAGS LOVES ME.

And, likewise, I love it!

Ok, now that the initial extasy has worn off...

I think this was a ploy more than anything. My father's been in the marketing business for most of his life, and it just doesn't make sense (knowing a little about the trade, but not following his footsteps) to create such a fanfare, then a week or so later, put Shockwave down, and a few days after THAT, tell everyone.

Ok, long sentence.

That said, I don't feel cheated by them at all. If this was a big ploy, I couldn't have been happier with the way it turned out.

Of course, if that is to be believed, you'd have to wonder what SF has to gain by that. I say that this was played to enthusiasts more than anyone, sort of, to tug at our heartstrings and make us feel bad about Whizzer leaving.

So that's my theory. If you don't like it, fine. I'm just throwing it out there as a possibility. If this ISN'T the case, and they had a change of heart (again, not likely, as they would have had to arrange for this for QUITE some time) that's all well and good too, because, if you've been reading my responses in the TR section (and to some misc. topics on the board) you'd know the extent to which I loathe Shockwave.

But, and let me make this clear, my hatred for TCFKAS (the coaster formerly known as Shockwave) does not transcend onto Arrow as a company in any way. (End disclaimer.) *** This post was edited by I-Nar on 8/8/2002. ***

With the removal of Shockwave...only one could ponder what new thrilling attraction will go there. Thank you Six Flags for saving a classic. :) It really goes to show that at least one Six Flags park cares about its customers. By the way..Do you think Shock waves closing yesterday had anything to do with this announcement?

Chris Godsey, I think your right - a Huge Floorless does sound amendible in place of Shockwave - it would fit as well - They could even go for a Record, 11 inversions? Who knows... I think a Floorless would be MUCH better than a B&M Flyer anyway... Just think about it - Superman : Floorless Flight or something to that effect! They NEED it!

Waaaaahhhhhoooooooo! YESS!!! This is such great news!!!!! I am in shock....the waves of joy are running through me! (sorry...bad pun)

Well, I am still going to be at the park on Sunday, if for nothing else to show my appreciation to SFGAm and their management team!

Posting, "Me too" like some brain dead AOLer. I ought to to the world a favor, and cap you like old yeller...

Hearing this news is (sadly) one of my best moments all summer!! ;)

As for the 'parking lot' aspect, it's easy to dump piles of dirt .. and adult (or near-adult) trees can be bought and planted around the new ride. Just because it's not being built around trees, doesn't mean it has to be treeless.

I am also one of the few who like shockwave .. but I honestly will not miss it too much .. Whatever will replace it will be at least as good, possibly better.

As for the "this was probably planned all along" comments, I agree with all of them .. but who cares?! Whizzer is staying! I wonder how much the "ride it again for the last time" Whizzer banner will get on Ebay?!
