Where to Sleep when going to the Point

Hey, Walt...funny thing about that...

I really started to notice it a few years back. It was really obvious when I was driving down First St. at 35 MPH and a motorcoach passed me, then passed the motorcoach ahead of me. There is a double yellow line down the middle of that road, along with the posted 35 MPH limit. The license plate on the back of the offending coach was from You Know Where.

Another great example is that double left-hand turn from US-6 to the connector that goes up to US-250. You know how they added that sign that says "CLOSED" above the big red "X" over the inside left-hand turn lane? One night after an early park close I was sitting in the outboard left-hand turn lane, and the inboard lane was closed. This didn't stop the two minivans from sitting in that lane, turning with me (even though their light never turned green) and attempting to drive down the center lane of the connector. Fortunately by the time they got all the way around the curve they spotted the oncoming traffic in that lane waiting for the signal to change. Otherwise the head-on collision would have been messy. Care to guess what was attached to both of the minivans?

Watching the traffic around Sandusky, I begin to understand why ******* has those ridiculous 'jug handles', where all left-hand turns are made from the far right lane.....

Better then the idiots in Ohio that turn into the far right lane from the left most lane.

I feel a little brawl coming on

BTW why is it there are tons of Michigan fans here in Northwest Ohio but absolutely no OSU fans in Michigan?

Seriously if you dont like the way we dive in Ohio...it's easy... dont come to Ohio! Sitting behind your computer complaining isnt going to do a darn thing. I happen to like that the majority of Ohioans do obey the speed limit. It makes me feel safer. Nothing irritates me more than an out of state car flying by me. When your in a different state have RESPECT for those who live there and travel on those roads everyday.

Comeon now! The reason Ohioans drive the speed limit is because they are being watched with a microscope. If you knew you could get away with doing 20 over the limit on the highway, you would most likely do it.

Growing up in the Chicago area, I have just become accustomed to the driving habits of Chicagoans. You get on a highway around here, you better keep up with the rest of the traffic. Its just the way it is.

I am not saying its right, but if you drive slowly(even the speed limit) on our highways, you are going to be in a world of trouble with others on the road. Even the trucks are pushing 80mph. They wont hesitate to intimidate you by riding right on your bumper.

If everyone is going +/-5 MPH of the SAME speed than any speed below 90 is relativly safe, heck I feel more safe in Colorado or Nebraska where the SL is 75 and most cars are going 70-85 than in Ohio where one the same class road they are going 55-85 The danger on Freeways is in overtaking and passing. It is a part of most peoples makeup that they feel safe driving no more than 80, so the closer the Speed Limit is to it the more consistant the average speed is.

A truck on my bumper because I'm not going fast enough? The only thing worse than a speeder is an arrogant speeder.

For those interested, here is a good site on the subject.

No, Ohioans speed too. Just as there is no real evidence that Ohio has more speed traps than other states, the notion that Ohioans are safer and/or slower drivers is also false. Michigan jokes aside (although, that is always fun :) ), a person's driving ability is not defined by his state. The idea of bad drivers on the North Coast is probably more related to a person being an obnoxious tourist rather than a Wolverine (that's a joke, don't get excited ;) ).

IMO, a person speeding doesnt necessarily make him a bad driver. If you are doing something like lane weaving, tailgating, etc., its a dangerous situation.

You have to keep up with traffic, its just the way it is, if you dont, you are actually making the situation more dangerous.

I am not saying Ohio is the speedtrap capital. What I meant by a microscope also includes highway troopers in plain view. They see you, you see them, you slow down.

I am sorry Maryland is the speed trap of american and they have more speed traps than any other state in the country! Its a fax! If you are going 10mph over the speed limit is more safe at 65 and having someone at 75 come up behind you. Messing around in the left lane is dangerous. Remeber its a passing lane. People in PA tend to forget that,. If you wanna do 55 or lower we have a lane for that. Its the RIGHT LANE!!!

That's correct, it's the passing lane ... as opposed to the speeding lane.

Crashmando, if you do 55 in the right lane, or any lane for that matter, of a state highway like 30 or 48, you'll probably get a ticket. Though I haven't gotten one yet ;)

Hey Walt,

Passing means going fast than people in the right lane. So call it what you will but don't do the speed limit in the left lane. FYI Watl. I love your site! I am there daily! Keep up the good work.

Where is Drachen Fire? RIP BIG GUY!

I have also grown up in Chicagoland where the speed limits are still 55mph on freeways, but if you go any less than 65, you are obstructing traffic. Maybe they should just raise the speed limit to be more accurate. As long as you keep up with the pace of traffic, you shouldn't be liable to get pulled over. If you are speeding to a point where you end up weacing around cars, or you are going so slow that you are holding up traffic, that is when you should get a ticket. No matter what state you are in.

This is odd, I lived in Sandusky for four years, and just recently moved to Naperville, so I see two sides to the discussion. My dad is trying to blend in with the crowd, so he is becoming a "FIB" as they say. Although, he still awards points from his scoring system to the truly stupid moves Illinois natives may pull off.

What the heck is a "FIB" TTDTom???

Thank you for clearing that up for our friends from out-of -state, Chitown. However, we can call ourselves the Friendly Illinois Brothers

Glad to be of service. :)

Only disturbing thing is that the person that asked (George aka "redman") is from and lives currently in Illinois. :)
