As I recall, the brakeman also is the "grip". The trains use a cable grip much like a San Francisco cable car. The reason these may not be considered "classics" is because the mechanical brake systems have been replaced with air brakes. There are now air tanks on the car where the brakie sits. He controls the speed with the twist of a valve instead of heaving on a lever. The tanks are recharged each time the train comes back in.
