What exactly is The Ultimate?

Yeah, steels, woodies, and loopings book...

Would you mind checking the copyright on that book? Believe it or not, it doesn't say 2002, the last version came out in 1998.

Did everyone forget about Daidarasaurus at Expoland (then Amusement Zone at the International Exposition) in Suita, Japan?
The steel coaster, built in 1970 by Sansei Yusoki Co., Ltd., is 7677' 2" long. That is 235' 2" longer than The Ultimate built in 1991.

The Ultimate is the longest wooden coaster

Again, The Ultimate is not....NOT a wooden coaster.
Daidarasaurus was a racing coaster that they made into one continuous coaster. When it was built it was only half that long so it was not the longest coaster when it was built.

For proof that the Ultimate is NOT a woodie, check out this shot -- not a bit of wood in there...

I heard complaints about both the Ultimate and Daidarasaurus so I think if I'm over in the UK or Japan, I'll just stick to The Big One and Steel Dragon :)

Chris Sawyer said that the mine train in Katie's World was based on The Ultimate. Can anyone tell me how accurate his recreation was?

I was thinking that it was really similar by looking at the pictures.

Yes, Magnumforce, Daidarasaurus was indeed a racing coaster until 1999. I rode it in 98, when it was still a racing coaster with each side labelled. One side was known as Super Speed Type 1, and the other was knows as Many Curves Type 2. Last summer, the ride was basically as loud and annoying as possible, with twice the length, and twice the boredom. :)

LOL! It is a railroad bed once off the wooden lift structures! It still manages to get a few descent drops using the terrain. After the 1st lift & drop, theres a 2nd drop taken at terrain level..then a long ground level section through the trees running up to the bunny hops, onto the 2nd lift. Then there's the biggest drop of the ride into the valley below, from here on its terrain level up the other side of the valley, into a 180 turn with loads of airtime and lateral G's, and back down the side of the valley, up the other side, another 180, then back down into the valley and so on untill a sraight section over the golf course-sounds crap but taken at high speed at ground level, everything passes very quickly... its a good effect. Then a couple of helixes through the tunnels followed by the lift back into the station...(breathe!)
