um, its not like those mass slaughtering happen on a daily basis bud, and dolphins washing up on the shores is perfectly normal, its nature dude...
Here's the animal industry/research side of it.

I really don't want to debate it...it is one of the biggest debates in the world.

I've never been called bud and dude before...thanks babe! *** This post was edited by jgfama on 4/15/2002. ***

It definitely is a big debate topic. Everyone has a right to their own opinion.

I will say this, though. These whales were caught in the wild. Read the story. Locking up a smart creature like a whale is not the same as locking up a deer or other animal with a small brain. Whales are smarter than that.

I find it funny how some people complain about enviornmentalists but at the same time complain about pollution, air quality, and such. If it wasn't for these "tree huggers" corporations and the government would have free reign and destroy our quality of life for their own profit.

If you want to protect the world's animals from danger by locking them up then why not do it with something more precious... your kids. Sure, lock them up too in your house so they never get in a car accident, get raped, get robbed. Blatant slaughtering is one thing that must be stopped but trying to change the course of nature is another.

We have learned a lot from these animals in captivity that ALLOWS us to help save them in the wild. It may be a nice idea to study them in the wild but, it is VERY difficult. I'm sure that due to the progress of the world these studies are easier now but, they are by no means easy to do.
Personally, I believe there should be some limitations to keeping organisms in captivity but, I don't believe that completely eliminating it would be of much benefit to us and the world that we live in. (That is just my opinion and I hope you repect it, as I repesct yours)

Busch is a corporation that wants to make money? Gasp! You're not serious are you? I was under the impression they were taking a loss building roller coasters and brewing beer for us!

If what Agent Johnson says is true about Busch parks being serious cash cows (and knowing who he really is I don't doubt he's right), then it makes perfect sense that Busch pushes its conservation efforts. If you can afford it, then as a good corporate citizen, that's what you do! Heck, POP World Media, LLC donates money and I've yet to actually have a profitable year. Why does Bill Gates donate $25 million a crack to build academic buildings at colleges? Because he can and it's the right thing to do.

At issue isn't their motivation, but rather what we get out of it for the sake of our culture, science and connection with our environment (which we've come a long way in destroying since the industrial revolution).

See, I *sometimes* wish I wasnt a cynic, then I could actually believe that statement. Unfortuneately, I'm not, therefore I belive he does it for a very self serving interest: Free Advertisement!

oh to be naive again....

well said jgfama, that's probably the one main point I failed to note in my previous post....but yes, I can *and do* go into the past to right the wrongs of our ancestors. Busch does study their animals for valuable scientific research, and gathers knowledge relatively unattainable through the observation of these animals in their natural habitats. Their animals are NOT anything like those of the early traveling circuses....and I respect what they do in that regard.

Jeff was doing really well too, until the Gates thing...I do believe that he is putting money in the right place to do the most good - hey, I work at a University in an office where we do a lot of medical research - guess which one.... But his motives, like the rest of us, are not entirely unselfish....

I'm no naive... but I've not lost faith that all people are at least fundamentally good. And yes, I understand it's self-serving to a certain degree.
