Vertical Velocity spike completed at Marine World

Posted | Contributed by Brian Grapes

SFMW Online posts several photos of the new front spike of Vertical Velocity at Six Flags Marine World. Construction looks to be complete and it's quite a difference! The retractable floor that is supposed to be added to the station has not yet been started.

Looks terrible IMO. SFMW just shouldnt have gone over the height limit. I've heard that its the reason they are doing these modifications. It looks cool going right over the entrance plaza, but Intamin should have made it more of a 45-50degree angle IMHO.

Make it to SFNE for S:Ros and BDK!!!!

It is quite ugly. I hope it is a great ride for the people from Cali. But, as my first reaction thought...damn thats ugly.

That's awsome!!! But, sort of weird in a not-so-twisting kind of way. I'd love to ride it. :) *** This post was edited by B&M fan on 5/6/2002. ***

Considering the alternative - complete removal - I think going from a clone to something original is pretty cool.

Not sure I get how it's ugly. Looks a lot like Volcano to me. Of course, people don't like the way that ride looks either.

I agree, Mamoosh... you put in a clone, people complain... you modify a clone and turn it into something original (and potentially awesome), people complain... what gives? SFMW visitors have had a new coaster experience each year since 1998, I can't see what the problem is.

Of course, Rob, we're complaining about people complaining, and they'll counter and complain about us complaining about their complaining. And that'll make us mad and we'll complain that they complained about us complaining about them complaining.

Ouch...my head hurts now.

D2....Diagonal Velocity Sounds cool, looks gross. Sorry but to me it does. I think it will be really cool though.
This has to be Six Flags biggest blunder to date. How stupid are they building a ride over height restrictions and then having to redo the whole ride to conform to height restrictions. Who are the idiots who run Six Flags? It just makes me wonder.

coaster895 - I doubt this has much to do with SF corporate. It sounds like a park blunder to me. In fact I'd be willing to bet the money it took to re-do V2 would have gone for something else at the park, or something new at some other SF park.

BTW, what other Six Flags blunders did you have in mind?

I actually think this modification will add a lot to the ride and the park. It might not look like anything else, which people diagnose as "weird" or "ugly" (kinda like people :) ), but it's definetely better than no ride at all. I think taking that twist at a more horizontal level at such high speeds will be very exhilirating. Are there any other rides that take a twist at 60+ MPH? I don't know of any. Plus it should be pretty cool seeing the train spiraling overhead when you walk through the entrance.

I would definetely not consider this a bluder, or a bad thing even, I think it will be a huge hit with park patrons and enthusiasts (once they warm up to it and swallow their words). And, yeah, what "blunders" has Six Flags made? I know all of us normal folk think we could do a better job running a multi-billion dollar company than the SIx Flags guys do, but we know that's not true. They may not make decisions popular with the roller coaster enthusiast groups all the time, but they make their decisions based on the GP and business. And, in this case, it's probably good business to be within zoning limitations...

Crito, ergo sum.

Until proof is shown here that it was because of height restrictions, I dont think its really fair to call SF stupid in this case. Alot of talk about height but really nothing to back it up. Can someone provide a link that proves it was indeed modified because of a height disagreement?

I guess I'm in the minority on this one, but I think it looks kinda cool.

I'm not saying I'd trade SUE for it, but I like it. It seems like you'd feel like you're gonna fly right off the track when you're spinning at that angle.

I like the vertical spike, but it seems like this would be a great combination of that and a zero-g.

Y'know what'd be cool? Three of these right next to each other... a modern day version of Lightning Loops. One could go vertical, one at an angle, and one could loop.

Sorry Mamoosh I guess I should shut up and wait to ride, that was just appearence but maybe the ride will be the best thing in the world.

I think it looks different, but cool and now it's not a clone :)

Yeeuchh!

This looks lame. Hope it rides better than it looks.

Only San Francisco could have a 'limp' spike. You know what Im saying!

Very Weird. It looks so different with all those supports. I'm sure it'll prove to be a good ride.

Here we go with the ride before you judge thing. *rolls eyes*

If someone complains about a ride looking boring or stupid, they slap them with the "ride it first" crap. Oh, but let it be something like "that looks awesome" and no one says anything about it. They are both judgements - one positive, one negative. And I have yet to figure out why judging a ride is so wrong. Personally, I think the ride is really messed up. And guess what? You can post all the ride it first crap you want, but my opinion will still stay the same.

My response to that is a big fat "so what". Yeah the ride is odd looking(mostly because we're so used to the original), but it's not like we haven't seen odd looking coasters before, get over it. It's not like any of you have to sit and look at it all day.

Man, the things some of you sit around complaining about.

It's now known as DIAGONAL VELOCITY!!!

LOL
