UPDATED: Walt Disney Company facing internal pressure over Florida's "don't say gay" bill

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

Disney employees are showing their outrage over the entertainment company's decision not to denounce Florida's so-called "Don't Say Gay" bill, which would limit discussion of sexuality and gender in Florida schools. According to the accountability news site Popular Information, "in the last two years, Disney has donated $197,162 to members of the Florida legislature that have already voted for the 'Don't Say Gay' legislation," including to sponsors of the bill, Florida Rep. Joe Harding (R) and state Sen. Dennis Baxley (R).

UPDATE (21:00 Eastern): CEO Bob Chapek intends to schedule a meeting with DeSantis, and the company committed $5 million to the Human Rights Campaign. Read more from The New York Times.

It isn't a color thing. I'm as independent as they come. I don't care much for the Dems or the Republicans. I'm simply suggesting that kids today are likely capable of handling more than we give them credit for. They are dealing with a lot of crap (social media, violence, 24 hour news channels) that I certainly never was exposed to.

I don't know what "all" age related restrictions means, but I'm pretty sure that educators should be deciding what is developmentally appropriate before a bunch of bigots in Tallahassee.

We've been slowly but surely eroding any decision-making power that public school teachers have in their classrooms since before (most of us) we were born.

Promoter of fog.

Kids probably do deal today with more than we did when most of us were kids. But taking that to say we shouldn't care about anything (or just about anything in any case) additional with which kids must deal seems like an odd next step. And ultimately, I suspect its a step more likely taken by someone who supports said thing rather than someone who doesn't.

I see a lot of color team reasoning in the first post which is why I asked the question.

As we discussed in the Covid tome, policy is set by politicians. In terms of education, that tends to be at the state level.

For better or for worse, based on views that public education sucked (which in my experience is an overgeneralization/oversimplification -- my kids public school education ran circles around the private school education I got 40+ years ago -- some public schools in the country are very good and others are not -- just like teachers are underpaid is an overgeneralization/oversimplification in that in some districts, teachers are well paid but in others not so and everywhere in between) there has been movement towards more standardized requirements. As a general rule, that will tend to reduce freedom at the individual teacher level.

Sure, and standardization has been weaponized as a means for funding. It's a terrible practice because it consistently disadvantages schools in areas that serve people of color, and it doesn't account for the wild variations in developmental progress that kids have (as any parent of an autistic kid will tell you). So it's definitely worse, not better. And this nonsense from the Florida legislature isn't about any of that anyway.

State funding for education varies by state. Not sure how many of them have weaponized standardization (however that is defined) as a means for funding though.

Funding is part of the issue for struggling schools. Cleveland is near the top in terms of per pupil spending. Education gaps aren't single issue problems.

I responded to posts that weren't about the Florida bill.

It was hard to find a recognized news source for this that wasn't a crazy Disney blog:

Florida legislature threatens to repeal Reedy Creek Improvement Act over Disney's "woke ideology"

I don't think elected people above the local level realize how much corporate money enables them to campaign. Most people in the public know it, and want it changed, but state and federal legislatures won't change the arrangement. If these haters think they can survive without, more power to them, but I can pretty much guarantee it won't end well for them.

And by the way, this is completely stupid. Orange and Osceoloa Counties don't need or want the law enforcement or infrastructure burdens of taking in WDW.

From that post,

“If Disney wants to embrace ‘woke’ ideology, it seems fitting that they should be regulated by Orange County.”

Ignoring for a moment the continued weaponization of the term, 'woke,' what on earth does the one have to do with the other?

Nothing, obviously, just like Judge Jackson's senate hearings have nothing to do with her actual qualifications. I mean, back in the day when Ginsburg was confirmed, it was by a 96-3 vote.

The weaponizing of the word "woke" triggers me as much as it triggers consertives. The first definition you get when you google the word is...

"alert to injustice in society, especially racism."

So, by that definition, Right-wing extremist media is encouraging people to support racism and injustice? It makes Right-wingers angry when people or businesses choose to fight against these things? The buzzword is negative somehow?

Like I've been saying since 'He Who Shall Not Be Named" was cheered on by half the country for admitting that he likes to molest women without even asking, We. Are. Doomed.

What some people call woke is really them being called out for being an asshole to other human beings.

The Married To The Mouse author weighs in:

“If you ask me whether it’s politically possible to take these privileges away from the Disney company, I don’t think so,” Foglesong said. “I think that cooler minds will prevail and that this is really a shot across the bow to try to bring the Disney company, Mickey Mouse if you will, into line with Governor DeSantis. I thought it was more of March Madness of the political kind, the thought that the Republican Party, which used to be the party of business, would want to take on of their biggest donors.”

This dip**** talks about the "tyrannical mayor of Orange Country" and having to pay Orange County taxes. Disney already pays significant taxes to Orange County, and the mayor is not even remotely a dick, not to mention county government still supercedes municipal (RCID) law. I'm not surprised that legislators in Tallahassee don't understand basic civics.

We have a Winner!

De Santis is obviously trying to run the Trump playbook, and as per usual with the GOP, is using faux culture war issues to gin up the rubes. What will be interesting to watch is how Bob Iger plays his hand. He has no love for Chapek, and he HATES De Santis. Iger has quasi-competing goals (his own latent interest in running for office, and his love for the Disney Company) and DeSantis is mucking with both of them. If Iger gets really motivated he can bring a lot of resources against DeSantis leading up to 2024.

Of course DeSantis is an idiot and doesn't recognize this, but he's using big bad Mickey as a foil for MAGAworld headlines.

“It’s time to void your household of all things Disney.”
“Disney will ‘lose on this wokeness gamble’.”
Well, the joke’s on these dummasses. Perhaps they don’t realize or have forgotten that Disney has previously set a tone of inclusivity. LGBTQ+ employees have always been accepted and Pride week and associated activities have been held for a long time now. Eliminating gender-specific announcements (I’ve read that actually took place a while back and it’s now finally noticed) and taking a hard look at this ridiculous bill may bring things to a new level but should only be considered a step forward.
The young father from Tennessee who states he’ll let his kids watch the older shows must not have a problem with racism, sexism, or outdated views.
We’ve considered a place in Florida for at least the winter but now I don’t think I could do it. Too much daily anxiety for me.
