UPDATED: Hersheypark announces unnamed Intamin rocket coaster

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

Hersheypark today announced the 2004 addition of an Intamin hydraulic launch coaster. The ride will send riders from 0 to 72 mph in about two seconds. The ride will stand 150 feet tall and feature a 180-foot drop. It will also have a 135-foot "cobra loop" and barrel rolls. It has not yet been named, but the public can vote to choose a name.

Go to the official Hersheypark site or read the press release.

Way to go, Hershey! I bet CF and Dorney park just let out a huge "D'oh!" today

Mamoosh, you'd probably be surprised on how long some people have known about this ride. ;)

I doubt there will be any impact on CP for this. Dorney probably more so because they are in a closer relationship to each other.

Renegades the best name, they could play the song in the queue.

Finally the rocket coaster is doing something that isn't gimmicky

Another great addition to Hersheypark! Finally a launch coaster in PA, and it looks like a pretty damn good one too! How many trains do you think they will run on this beast? I'm guessing they will be able to run at least 3 easily.

Signature will be closed today. Sorry for the inconveinance.

This coaster looks incredible, I'm glad to see Intamin add a little variety to the rocket coaster. Now, am I missing something because I don't remember seeing the cobra roll on the video. The trains should also be intriguing.

By the way, I voted for Renegade.

The stats page says two trains, IIRC.

Coastersbolts you are right you didn't see a cobra roll in the video because there isn't one. It's a cobra loop which is basically an immelman.
Looks like a lot of fun.....Ether Steel Stampede or Renegade is fine with me but storm runner isn’t to "western" in opinion.

caostercoady, I'm not sure about the cobra loop being the same as an immelman. It looks to me like the "cobra loop" starts out just like a cobra roll, but stops halfway through it, making the end of this element at a much higher point than where it started and traveling at a 90 degree angle relative to the way it entered.

I'm pretty sure an immelman ends at ground level or near it and turns the train 180 degrees relative to the way it entered. This leads me to beleive that this is definately a "new" element.

SCREAM with me... in 2003!

I will be one of the first to say, Storm Runner just doesn't fit that park, they already have Lightning Racer, a storm title is a bit redundant. Steel Stampede is good, and Renegade isn't to bad, I favor Steel Stampede, but I probably will go and vote for Renegade also
Wow.

I'm suprised a park has the guts to install such a ride.

Way to go and the best of luck Hersheypark! Hope 2004 is a winner for you.

I don't know about the rest of you, but the straight drop off the tophat looks to be pure genius. If there is air at the top ( which there should be ), you should get air from the top and down the entire drop. It may be one of the best drops ever created!

Looks like another trip east for me next year.

Without the chaindog, you'd never get up the lifthill...

It's certainly way beyond the one trick wonders that are Xcelerator and TTD."

Ummmmmmmm, NO. Xcelerator is in NO WAY a "one-trick" coaster. TTD might be, but definately NOT Xcelerator. How is a launch, top hat (over 200 feet), huge overbank turn, followed by another one through the middle of the top hat considered, "one trick?"

<_<

An Immelman is a way to convert speed into altitude, half-loop with half-roll at top, so you end higher than where you start. It is named for its creator/best known first time user. A split-S is those elements in reverse order for a quick 180 turn and increase in speed at a cost of altitude.
Two trains? Ouch.

Great Job HersheyPark!!!

I totally agree with the color scheme and feel that 'Renegade' is unique and descriptive of Hershey's attitude on this coaster.

It looks like a heck of a ride...

I really enjoy the Simpsons. It's just a shame that I am starting to LOOK like Homer.

The press release says the ride will feature a dual station, but will the station be like the one on TDD where there are seperate stations to unload and load the trains, or two stations next to each other? Im guessing it will be more like the TDD form, but can anyone confirm this?
This is a 2600 foot coaster but by all meaures woudl be closer to 4000 if it had a conventional lift.

The ending looks nuts with the crazy twisting double up to the brakes after the snake dive.

If given the choice I'd choose a hamburger over a hotdog anyday of the week.

You're saying a lift would be 1,400 feet long (minus whatever the launch track is)?

DELETED! What time does the water show start?

I think this is a very good investment for Hershey. Before I never really had an intrest in visiting Hershey. Dont get me wrong im sure its a really nice park with some good coasters but now with them adding this new rocket coaster I want to make the trip over there to ride it. I think this could be the case for others as well and next year along with years to come will be big years for them.
I am glad to see that Hershey is starting to get more intense thrill rides. 1st the Claw, and now a rocket coaster. They are off toa good start. Next thing you know they'll have 450' tall Intamin non looping. If they keep heading in this direction we'll see that for their 100th anniversary.
