Turbulence cancelled at Hersheypark, park sues manufacturer

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

Hersheypark announced their 2005 coaster, Turbulence, has been cancelled. Park officials say the manufacturer, Interactive Rides, wouldn't deliver ride to contract specifications. The park filed suit in federal court after the manufacturer raised the price from $2 million by an additional $1.2 million.

I find it funny that screamscape is reporting that it may be a hoax.
You are rght Jim. I work for a metal building company and about this time last year we were selling our buildings for around 1500 - 1600 bucks a ton. Now, through several price increases over the year we are about 2100 - 2200 bucks a ton. It definately hurts the businesses that are trying to build a new building. Our orders have almost cut in half over the course of a year. Rumors around the office are hinting at at least one more smaller increase before 2nd quarter next year.

Impulse-ive,why do you think Hershey is in the wrong? If you signed a contract to buy a car for $15,000 and just before delivering the car they said "We didn't charge you enough. It's going to cost you another $2,000 to get the car", would you still buy it?

I say good for Hershey for not paying any more than they agreed to.

I think we have concluded that anonymous sources are the best source for news and information!

Is it too late to rebuild the giant wheel? J/k of course, but it's dissappointing that it was taken down for this new ride which isn't coming now. I thought Hershey bought the O2 drop ride from MSAP. Guess that didn't happen either.
For those who're keeping track at home, I think that makes the score as follows:

'moosh -- 0
Dippin' Dots Guy -- 2

:)

Ahhh so I was wrong...and so was that PR lady I called...grrr!

*bows humbly before the conspiracy theorists*

LoL dan I go to Adventureland alot lol so that would be cool

LOL Maddie. I think after this, Hydra's prelift inversion, and SFMM building 3 coasters in the same year I'm in negative territory ;)
I think your calendar more than makes up for that, 'Moosh! :)

I'm disappointed that the ride isn't being built, but I can understand why. Maybe this will open the door for a more traditional drop ride. How about an Intamin Gyro Drop? There isn't one of those anywhere close. Not that it matters much to me... as long as they keep Lightning Racer running the way it does, I'll be a happy camper!

IR was also going to drop one of the cars from the ride to reduce costs.

It doesn't appear to be a great loss. The ride was hideous looking, and it really did not look that interesting. Shame the giant wheel had to go...........

I had always been under the impression that Interactive Rides was high school coaster geek having fun with a Website.

Anyway, perhaps they could figure out how to stuff it into a couple semis and take it on the county fair circuit. Look out Hi Miler! ;)

It looks like CCI all over again...some small company thinking they can sell prices when they should be selling rides.
I'm on the other side of the spectrum. I was not a fan of tearing down Giant Wheel. I understand their reasons, but found it tough to give in to the realities on that unique ride. One classic ride out but in the end two classic rides return.
"How about an Intamin Gyro Drop? There isn't one of those anywhere close."

Depends how you define close. The two 'nearby' Intamin Gyro towers I know of are at PKI and PKD, and after a quick mapquest search, PKD is 210 miles away, and PKI is 463 miles away.

So it's all in your definintion of 'close'. ;)

Thanks for the complaint Torgo! Seems like a cut and dry case IF the complaint is factual.
I thought this was an off the shelf type of ride. Wouldn't they already have the engineering for the ride done?
The detailed engineering is likely to have not been completed until a contract was available for the first unit. It's a lot of money for a small company to spend designing something that they might or might not ever sell. I think that you will find that this is the case for most prototype amusement rides.

It sound like IR blew their estimate and discovered that they couldn't build the ride for anywhere near the contracted price. They then tried to get Hershey to make up the difference. This is something that Hershey refused to do. If I were Hershey's management, I would do the same thing. IR apparently was failing to perform both from a viewpoint of time and cost. Hershey had to consider the possiblity of further price increases and further delays, leaving them with no ride, a mess in the construction area, and lots of wasted money.

Unfortunately, it is probably too late for Hershey to install another major ride for 2005.
