Trip to Six Flags Great America

My family is planning a trip to the Six Flags near Chicago (Gurnee is it?) from Akron Ohio. Can anyone give me any help with anything about the park? Any tips? Thanks...
best tip. Dont listen to what other people think of the park. Go in with an open mind. And have fun.

My advice: Hit DV and V2 early before they break down and ride towards the back, Bull and Viper ride back row, ride AE backwards (drop is killer), Iron Wolf and Shockwave ride at your own peril--very intense but some people love em. I would not ride either of these coasters early as they have the potential to adversely affect your health and ruin your entire day. Demon is a waste IMO. Whizzer is a classic historical coaster so hit it. Triple Play and East River Crawler are my favorite flats.

Enjoy.

Great America is my home park, as well. IMO, might as well hit all the rides you can, flat and other. There are a few rides there that you would be hard pressed to find at other large parks, like Condor. Plus, it's a beautiful park, with a lot of nice scenery, despite it being flat as a board. Raging Bull is the best coaster period, but the woodies Viper and American Eagle are both worth riding as many times as you can manage. And do check out V2, the back lift has an interesting visual over the pond. Have a great time! Post your trip report when you're back!

Crito, ergo sum.

Depends on when your going..If it's a weekday, I'd say you have two options head to the left OR the right..If you choose to go towards the right head to Deja Vu if it's open, if it's not open in the morning I'd say go to the left side of the park HIT BATMAN right away (that's my ride, make sure you say HI to me) then head accross get V2, and work your way around the park. I'd say skip over shockwave, Iron Wolf isn't that bad. American Eagle Backwards is a must. Do Giant Drop if there isn't a long wait, and make sure you wait for Raging Bull..If you have time hit Whizzer..Not my fav. but there are a lot of rumors of how this is the last year. Also don't forget SFGAm is a theme park, they have some great shows..eat during off times. Now if it is a weekend that your going..I'd say go to the RIGHT side of the park..and IF I were you I'd get FASTLANE...especially if it is a BUSY day (SATURDAY) It costs $10 for 4 rides..You may consider that a waste but somedays there is a wait for Batman which is over 2 hours and the fastlane wait is 15-20 mins...ultimately it's your call...good luck and I hope you enjoy your trip to SFGAm!!!

One last thing..if you get a chance to ride Deja Vu..if it's open I would wait for the front either the first or second row..best seat on the ride..also if the wait is 3 hours...I would consider waiting..best ride in the park when it's working~

"We here at Six Flags consider the handrails our friends, and since you don't sit on your friends please don't sit on ours...thank you"

I strongly disagree with Demon being a waste ride it in the back thinking the ride is going to suck, it will surprise you.

Unfortunately I feel that Bull is running "cold" this year but it's still a B&M marvel that I'm sure you'll love.

I suggest hitting Deja Vu right at opening and then get in line for it 15 minutes before the park closes.

Also try to hit V2 and Batman early, there isn't much on that side of the park so those rides tend to get longer lines even on empty days.

Viper usually always has a short line, try riding up front in row 1:2 or 1:3 for a even shorter line if the station is packed.

Make sure you ride Raging Bull back car the first time and last time you ride it if you want a great ride, if you ride it in front the first or last time you ride it you might be disappointed by the ride.

Don't go over to Shockwave until later in the day. Whatever you do don't wait for this ride because youll kick yourself at all the time you wasted waiting for it when its walk on later in the day.

Ride Demon whenever you are in the area or around it, its usually walk on all the time (unless you go on Saturday).

Ride Eagle Red in the afternoon but ride Eagle Blue later in the day so you don't have to wait.

Also don't go on a Saturday, try going on a Sunday if possible. Sunday crowds are usually light in the morning and clear out very early later in the day.

Best way to ride the Whizzer: Sit in the very front for the view (with maybe a one train longer wait) and sit alone and cross-legged. It gives a nice feeling of openness and on all the laterals you keep on sliding into the soft cushions on the side. Don't go for the back. I tried it and it was really boring.

i'm with bullfan on this one
Ride the Whizzer before it's gone.

I agree. Get to Whizzer b4 Aug. 12 (last day of commission, after that, it's gone). Demon's a fun family coaster as well as Viper. Eagle backward is surreal, but only if u haven't riden it several times. Iron Wolf and Shockwave are serious coasters not to be taken lightly unless u like killer headbanging. Raging Bull, V2, and Deja Vu are SFGAm's marvels. Hit these immediately, they rack up BIG lines. Oh, and Batman? The first ever inverted looper. Coaster history, baby!

Take it up a notch, Mr. Operator! I wanna feel my brains in my feet!

Oh, I love the Whizzer. Be sure to ride Batman and Iron Wolf. Shockwave will hurt, but try your best. Ride it

Whizzer (1976-2002) Farewell my Friend

I rode front seat on Shock Wave, killer drop, but I blacked out in all three loops. RB was my favorite, DV might have been if I hadn't been stuck on it for 45mins after the loop. My advice though would be to hit all the coasters first, then relax on the flats.

B&M, the next pki sensation!

Stuck on it for 45 min. after the loop?

Ride Viper and Eagle later in the day as they will give much better rides.

Many rides are great at night .. Whizzer, Demon and Viper.

Don't forget to sit in the third row (from the front) on Viper.

When are you planing on being there?

I'm also planning a trip to SFGAm specifically because my son is going to meet an on-line buddy there. We are likely going on August 8 (A thursday), so I hope it's less crowded.

Looks like I'll get a Whizzer ride in before it goes away.

Any recommendations for a hotel?? It's a 5 hour drive from Detroit, so we'll want to find a place close by. Anyone know if there is a Red Roof Inn?

Try Baymont Inn and suites. It's reasonable, they have free breakfast buffet, and they have a pool.

Otherwise the Holiday Inn has a very good reputation.

CPLady. Here is a website with 6 hotels right by the park.

Also try the Book hotels, air , cars link located in the tools section.

Ric Flair was hitting on the female host, he told her - "Space Mountain may be the oldest ride in the park, but it has the longest line." WOOOOO!

Thanks Buzzers! Hopefully I'll see some of you "locals" there. My son has already warned me he'll be pulling a "teenager" on me and going off with his friend to ride. If I can't convince the hubby this will be a fun trip, I may be riding coasters alone.
