Top Thrill 2 faces extended closure for modification

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

From the official Cedar Point website:

Top Thrill 2 is currently experiencing an extended closure as Zamperla (the ride’s manufacturer) completes a mechanical modification to the ride's vehicles. Once the modification is complete, Zamperla, the Cedar Point maintenance & operations teams and our third-party ride inspection partner will conduct a thorough review before approving both the modification and the reopening of the ride.

Though we cannot yet confirm a reopening date, we will provide updates here.

We know our guests are excited to experience this incredible roller coaster, and we share your disappointment that we are not able to operate it this weekend. We will do everything possible to reopen Top Thrill 2 as soon as we are confident we can deliver the ride experience that our guests deserve.

without everything new being done

I don't think TT2 is in this category. It ran for previews (very reliably on the day I was there) and for the first week of operations. That's a lot different than "we will open it in July."

without everything new being done

Sorry wasn’t clear meant everyone but the Point, Kings Island half of Camp Snoopy done, Great Adventure Flash just being at Footers, Dorney having 2 weeks without Iron Menace, etc, and lord knows how many stalled things at rest of SF.

Obviously most southern parks now year roundish, but was surprised new Dolly experience at Dollywood wasn’t open before spring break, but maybe Memorial Day now, yet marketing for it everywhere.

I doubt it makes Memorial Day last week, a lot of work was still not done (including giant Dolly butterfly.). Most distressing however was the Dollywood Express being down all week, per ride ops Katie and Cinderella both have issues preventing the park from firing up either engine.

Iron Menace opened almost 2 weeks early. I rode it during a season pass preview.

The new coaster at Great Adventure is standard operating procedure for Six Flags. Their parks never open new rides even remotely close to the start of the season.

Iron Menace opened almost 2 weeks early. I rode it during a season pass preview.

I went to look at tix, and said for public on May 10th? So was it only for pass holders or bad website language?

Opening day for Dorney was May 10. The previous two weeks were passholder and media preview days.

Off-seasons keep getting shorter and shorter

Just like my siestas!

Until the third is found, there is nonzero chance the other train flew off the back spike.

Was the train green?

Not to hijack the thread for Iron Menace, but.....

May 10th was indeed opening day, but the two weekends prior were preview weekends that anyone could buy a ticket for. Ride selection was limited, but definitely included Iron Menace. The season pass preview was way back on April 20th and 21st. It was damn cold.

Promoter of fog.

TT2 went down faster than a Kardashian at an NBA Party.

Are you MAN ENOUGH to ride this ride ?

I wonder if the problem, whatever it is, will also delay the opening of ThunderVolt.

Screamscape is reporting it may not be until at least July, or longer... Severe issue with the trains, but no information further.

That settles it. It will reopen this weekend.

I take their reports lightly. I suspect Memorial Day

Counting down the days until I'm back at Cedar Point, the one and only place to be.

I'm curious here. Obviously, I know that TT2 is a new launched coaster, and obviously Zamperalla has not done a huge number of large launched coasters. But, what fundamentally is so unique about the coaster trains? I get that the speed is slightly faster than most of their coasters, but it seems as if the trains should be pretty standard to build.

With the rumor about the wheels, has Zamperla used these specific wheels on any of their other rides? When the trains were introduced, the size and the circle cutouts of the wheels were quite noticeable. It’s possible that they overestimated the loads these wheels could handle or what the ride was going to put on them. The lateral forces experienced during the twist might be exceeding their designed capacity, causing issues. I'm not an engineer, this is just my brain trying to think outside the box.

I would argue it's not likely. Load is something they can simulate fairly well, and there's no way they were designing with small margins.

The holes reduce weight, or more importantly rotating mass. The more you have, the more energy you need to get it moving. (I don't know if this practically matters with 24 road wheels.) You probably have aluminum wheels on your car, and they're not solid either. Ever have one break?

Actually, it happens in the realm of where people track(road racing) their car. If you do track days, it's advised to clean and visually check your wheels after a track day.

Here is a forum post from a few years ago where someone had a wheel failure at a track.
