"This member has hidden their information. "

IMHO, if someone wants to hide their information for privacy reasons, fine, but certain fields should always be seen, such as date/time signed up...makes it easier to spot troll-like behavior

I totally agree. I can understand that people don't want to share certain information with the rest of the world due to privacy and all, but some things like the date they signed up and number of posts should be visible. Especially when you encounter so many troll invasions!

More important, "this member" is obviously singular, and therefore cannot ever correctly be a "they". If it's really such a bother that you can't bear to say, "This member has hidden his information," then recast the sentence and tell us that "This member's information is hidden." Or words to that effect.

There is no reason to butcher the English language.

"His" is appropriate and correct to describe someone whose gender is not known. At least the AP says so.

redman - I've been a member at Where's George for more than 2 years now. It's great fun. I do it casually but I've got something like 500 hits.

OK, so he didn't really say *that* per se, but I guess you KNOW where I'm going with this....there certainly IS good reason to *butcher* the Enlish language.......but ONLY if it's "wrecked for effect"...:). Sorry Dave, but you know the rules.....no one is immune....shoot, I even twisted one of Jeff's posts the other day....;). It's all good clean fun, save for the double entendres, which are still *pretty clean*...

Nontheless, your point makes sense....but the AP-approved style Den mentioned *is* somewhat misogynistic, and his/her always looks terrible....so I vote for your last suggestion.

'Gator, that's my point. People who mix plural pronouns with singular antecedents may claim that they are merely trying to avoid offending the ladies, but in reality they are indicating that they are either ignorant or lazy. More likely both. It always annoys me, but I usually ignore it. The context here is different, though, because it's a response string in a piece of commercial production software, and as such, it really ought to be fixed. It's almost as bad as that ad that I saw on a website recently with the word "nickel" misspelled in inch-high letters....... ;)

For you where's George-ers out there, I picked up a $1 or a $5 from SFOG, and I noted it in the description.

It's been so long since I used that site I don't remember how to. I think the last place it was spotted was Jacksonville, FL.
