The "Will Superman be open?" Questions

Well there are two options to speed up the process in getting the rides back up

Two options? Try one - retrofitting the current trains with new restraints. Why the hell would anyone spend money on new trains when the old ones can be retrofitted? I'm not even going to touch "option two."

based on what I heard last year B:TDK was originally planned for SFA but it got sent to SFNE instead.

Based on what you've heard, every single ride installed at a Six Flags park in the past three years has been "originally planned for SFA." Seriously, this is about the tenth time I've seen you claim some random ride was originally destined for SFA. It's simply not true.

TCKR: I count six trains. Am I missing something here?

Theres nothing wrong with the damn ride. It's the operator and the riders fault.

Is that your expert fourteen-year-old opinion? Wow, you should just call up Six Flags, I'm sure they'd have a job opening for you.

Seatbelts can be undone, and I'm sure can be manipulated in such a way that the rider can be ejected, which is why we need safe restraints. You can whine all you want about cover-ups, seatbelt issues, and unnecessary design changes, but the park isn't going to compromise the safety of its rides so that a few people, who seem to forget that a human being died as a result of a potential design flaw, can ride.

I don't know if this has really been answered in this thread, although it seems to have been discussed a bit, but how do Millenium Forces restraints/cars differ from the SROS coasters? If they are the same, how come Millenium Force isnt being looked at as well?

Certain victory.

well, i was hoping to get my first ride this year in early june, but my trip is all but cancelled anyhow do to cash restraints.

But if (okay IF) the ride is open by then, I may still go...

can you make sure its open for me, moosh?

Clint, from what I heard, Moosh could part the Red Sea. Then again, it is written, Jesus Saves, Moosh spends.

Oh well, I hope he can save you bucks. :P

Careful, Ed...up to know no one has blamed the SROS closures on you ;)

mOOSH [can control weather but not what rides SF has open]

I will still go to SFDL this weekend, but the word around these parts is that if S:ROS is closed no one wants to go to the park.

Like it or not the reality of the situation is that S:ROS is the main attraction at the park and a lot of younger folks go to ride it over and over again so i think this will have a huge impact on SFDL this summer.

But really this wouldn't be a big deal if SFI invested something else that is as thrilling or close to thrilling as of a ride on S:ROS.

Check the motto. *** Edited 5/13/2004 12:32:54 PM UTC by darienlakefan***

Your Park only has 1 good coaster! That's too bad!
They should put over the sholders restraints on all roller coasters and people who are unaware of ware they are when riding coasters will not fall out
Hey, I'm no expert but I assume it will effect admission rates. I think everyone is assuming too much of a difference between "the general public" and "enthusiasts." Just like "the general public" notices one train operation they also probably notice that SFNE is a water park with Superman gone.

I'll let you know myself, as I'll be there this Sunday. Unlike "enthusiasts", I like Thunderbolt and Riverside Cyclone, but if the park is crowded I don't like them so much to wait in a horrid line while enduring the one train operation they are forced to have. If it's crap weather (taking out the water park and water rides as an option), I think that both enthusiasts and the general public would notice that SFNE is a little lacking as a park without Superman.

dlakefan - are you telling me that the same people who went to SFDL and enjoyed it before SROS was built now don't want to go when SROS is closed? That there is nothing else at the park worth visiting for? Sorry...I'm not buying it.

rdreaming - I wouldn't make an assumption on SFNE's attendence and the effect of SROS's closure on a single day. But I hope crowds are light so you can enjoy the woodies ;)

When's the last time you needed a roller coaster to get to work?

That would be such a wonderful way to start and end the day...

We have tickets to fly to Hartford CT for the weekend of 6/4-6/6. Are we going to cancel because SROS is likely to be down? No. We plan on going to Canobie Lake and hopefully Funtown in ME on Saturday. We "might" go to SFNE on Sunday, but no guarantees about it. We're also considering LC or just spending the bulk of the day at Mohegan Sun or Foxwoods instead.

Besides, I'll probably need until after Labor Day before I can fit on the re-designed train. Gives us another excuse to go back up!

Well, Moosh... just in the SFDL fanboys (yes, me being one of 'em)... we had Nightmare before Superman, along with about 3 other flats that were removed once Six Flags took over.

...it's really not a factor whether it's going to effect attendance or not... but man, there's really going to be little to do at the park because lines aren't all that long unless Mine Eraser runs only 1 train. If they run two... the longest line of the day will just be the Grizzly Run. Everything else is usually a walk-on or 15 minute wait tops, so one can ride almost every ride in the park in just a few hours if they really tried.

...Superman kind of broke the tension there & helped eat up a little more time.
...and the waterpark, or lack-there-of, can't hold its own ground like New England or Six Flags America's... so although it's "just 1 ride", it's one ride that 50% of the peeps at the park look forward to. The only ones who TRY to stay the whole day are those who paid full admission price, are in the hotel/campground, or those who want to see the laser show.

I saw the reply answering how *TTD*'s restraints are different from the Supermans, but no reply on MF's restraints. The only difference I noticed on Millie's is a distinctly shorter seatbelt. If there isn't a major difference other than that, then MF's trains need to be looked at too.

Kitty

Aren't they also trying to redesign the geometry of the seats so that the rider's thighs are either parallel to the floor, or angled up away from the body? (Does that make sense?) This would seem to keep riders in the ideal position for those restraints. I can see how if your thighs are angled from yourself down towards the floor you could very easily "slip out." Would they have to either move the seats forward, or slope the seat bottom to more of a bucket to make this effective?

But then again, what do I know?

The key to leg position is often restricting foot room. If you can't put your feet far forward, you have to be bent at the knees and hips. Premier's new restraints are perfect examples of this. This is also why very tall people are not comfortable with Premeir's restraints.

Funny thing is...

Last year when my wife and I went on vacation, we made a special point to hit Canobie Lake (and loved it), Funtown (nice little park, great coaster), and Lake Compounce (loved it, but the heat was horrible), while at the same time deciding to actually skip a planned stop at SFNE (even with S:RoS running). You won't be dissapointed by those the three parks you mentioned... or by simply staying around in Mohegan (if that is Mohegan as in Mohegan Island in ME).

(IF you go to Funtown... go down the road a bit to Wells ME and stop at Mikes Clam Shack. Best Loberster Stew and Lobster Rolls you could ever imagine!)

Okay... nothing really do with S:RoS, except to say that S:RoS is but one coaster in New England. But then again, this is just me. Four great wood coasters win out over one great steel coaster anyday in my book.

"Yes... well... VICTORY IS MINE!"
Here are some excerpts from an email that the park sent to a friend regarding their superhero event in June. Note, the park didn't have to do this, and the entire email is very cordial and professional:

I apologize for any inconvenience the questions surrounding the event may have caused you. I have pushed back the enthusiast day until Friday, August 27th. This is because I don't know exactly when the coaster will be ready. It could be next week, could be June, could be whenever. For the Superhero day though, I want two trains and an open ride. I feel my best shot at that is waiting until a later date. I don't want to disappoint anyone who has either flown all the way here or driven from a zillion miles.

... Changes will include the Superman ERT being from 10pm until midnight and I've also added a couple of waterslides to the mix for the early morning.

Feel free to post information about the event that I've included, but I have no "official" comment as to the status of the ride as I am not a park spokesman.

Again, sorry for the change of plans,
Dave Swank

So with that being said, they may have the coaster open tomorrow, next week, or next month. Heck, it could take the rest of the year, but hey, stuff happens.

Hope that cleared up some questions, though I'm sorry I couldn't give a specific date;).

SLFAKE:

It's Mohegan as in Mohegan Sun. Gambling is another hobby of ours. We've been to Lake Compounce, and will probably go again in the future, but Boulder Dash wasn't having a great day - either that or it just doesn't do it for us. And the park itself... meh.

We're both native New Englanders, so lobster anything doesn't hold that huge of an appeal to us, but thanks for the suggestion!

That email, Clint, is precisely why I started this topic in the first place, so I'll reiterate my main point:

If you are planning a trip to SFA, SFDL, or SFNE this summer and SF has not given a firm opening date for SROS assume the coasters will be closed.

If you already have a trip planned to those parks and you cannot change your plans or cancel just go and enjoy the other things the parks have to offer. You would have done that had you arrived at the park only to find that SROS was closed for the day.
