"The Holiday World Greats"

I have heard so many great things about Holiday World and their two great coasters. This year i'm going to Stark Raven Mad for the first time and I can't wait. But before I go, I wanted to ask people who have ridden The Raven and The Legend a couple of questions. I haven't seen a forum on this yet, but which one do you think is the overall best ride of the two? What separates them apart from each other? What is the best part of the ride on either of them? Thanks!

The one I am on at the moment is my favorite of the two :)

Is it about coasters or friends? I say both!

I prefer the ride experience on Raven...*looks around for fruit projectiles*. Raven does more of what I personally like, and The Drop is just out of this world. Legend is considerably longer, and inarguably a world-class ride, but The Helix is not MY particular favorite (more taken by the ones on Twister and Beast). I love both of them at HW, and the park is *Simply the Best*...this year I got more Legend rides, but I'll make up for it in '03...;)

I agree that Raven is far, far superior. Raven really is like a story .. with a beginning, a middle, and an end. Plus, the ride continuously gets more exciting .. leading up to an amazing finish.

Legend, which is not a bad ride by any stretch of the imagination, just doesn't seem to do as much as Raven.

I love both of them but Raven ttakes the best spot, in the back seat you get 3 GREAT moments of airtime, the Drop is cool as sin and after the drop the zoom through the woods at break neck speeds finale is the best finale. The legend has very little airtime towards the from you get 1 supoer long moment of ejector air and one more pop, but if you ride it enough your legs will get bruised because of the insane laterals the coaster pulls, and my leg bruising came from the comfortable PTC, can't even imagine with the G trains.

I'm not sure why anyone would prefer Raven over Legend, especially with the PTCs. I guess that's why they have 31 flavors, no? It just seems to me that Legend does everything Raven does and more. But, they're number one and two on my list.

When I rode them both for the first time, I had a really hard time determining which one I liked better, but looking back, I have to give the edge to Legend, all the way.

That's not to say Raven is not a fantastic roller coaster. It DOES have more airtime than Legend, and "The Drop" (TM) is one of the greatest moments you'll find on any coaster, especially in the back. Maybe Raven would overtake Legend if it were just a bit longer, but in saying that I'm suggesting Raven is not perfect, which it is. :)

Legend is just a different type of ride than Raven, and it's the type I prefer. It's far more out-of-control, longer, and has these perfectly designed elements (the first drop, the double up with its "piledriver" airtime, the helix, etc.). It is also unbelievably fast all throughout its course. It's very lateral-heavy with some great airtime, while Raven is more airtime-heavy with some great laterals, I guess I would say.

Point of my post: Make sure you get to SRM.

Add me to those who prefer Raven to Legend.

I think the laterals were a bit too much for my tastes on the Legend. I really like the double up and getting pulled around the corners near the end, though.

But what puts the Raven over the top for me is the last section, after "The Drop," where you pretty much stay on the ground, dodging around trees. I do wish it were longer, but hey, you can't have everything.

A day is a drop of water in the ocean of eternity. A week is seven drops.

I have Raven and Legend in a virtual tie for 1st, along with Cornball Express and Shivering Timbers. Raven is the quintessential "no respite" ride. Other than the lift hill, it just builds and builds to an incredible finale. Legend, on the other hand, is like the ultimate terrain coaster. At night, especially during SRM, going out into those woods is always an adventure. Legend is a collection of amazing moments (dynamite first drop and a GREAT double up, which is immediately followed by a killer drop, as well as a gnarly helix), but it's not the complete story that Cameron aptly descibes Raven as.

Suffice it to say, both rides offer an amazing experience, especially in the darkness when the park has them greased up just right and the stations are filled with hyperactive enthusiasts hopped up on free sodas! Enjoy SRM!

They are my "fab four" too! All very different and nearly perfect at what they're built to do.

Raven and Legend in particular, are really different experiences and I love them both. Raven's short ride makes it nearly addictive...I don't think I'd feel the same if it was longer. Legend is crazy and intense, and I love the long tunnels most of all. And as long as they're in the same park, I don't need to worry about which I prefer overall. :)

For me, the *fab four* are Raven, Legend, Cornball and PHOENIX. Timbers didn't impress me nearly enough to crack into the top-tier...hopefully someday I'll get some of *those* rides on Timbers...

dawnmarie313 has hit the nail *SQUAH* about the Dynamic Duo though....hard to believe two woodies THAT good at a park THAT good....how long 'til SRM again...;)

'gator...Not that I am counting...but it is 158 days until SRM2003 ;)

Add this to the Dumb question List, but when and what is SRM? Is it a park sponsored event at Holiday World?

Ah, donuts...what can't they do?

Wow thanks guys.....now I can't wait even more because of all this great feedback about these two superior woodies.

I also prefer Raven to Legend. Perhaps because I rode Legend when she was running G-trains? Legend seemed like it couldn't make up its mind what it wanted to be, like it was trying to please everyone. In the process there are some dead spots. (despite its lack of a midcourse brake run) Rollergator described Legend's helix as "not his particular favorite" and I agree 100%. Not that I didn't enjoy Legend, but it seems the more "top 10" woodies I ride, the lower Legend falls on my personal ranking list. I'd love to give it another shot now that it runs PTC trains.

Raven, on the other hand, is downright fantastic from drop to stop. My only suggestion is that it could be a tad longer, but it is as near to perfect as anyone (at least myself) can ask for.

Nothing... NOTHING... can prepare you for... the Fourth Dimension!

This is like asking a parent which kid they love the most. Nevertheless, Raven made me see God or something in the woods that night, and although Legend came close, it wasn't nearly as cathartic. Raven is life changing.

seth: nicely said!

my best advice, listen to NOTHING you hear on this thread...go ride both with an open mind, because they are both INCREDIBLE wooden coasters....i rode both about 30 times each at the GOCC fall event this year, and i still cant decide which one i like more :)

but...Coastincorey, one thing is for sure....both Raven and Legend will take the breath right out of your lungs...they define the term "wooden roller coaster" :)

-----------------
hey...thats my story..and im stickin by it!!! :)
PKD 2003...drop rides will never be the same...Intamin rocks!! :)

I can't possibly see how anyone could like The Raven over The Legend. I made the mistake of riding The Legend first because it isn't #1, so I was a little disappointed with The Raven.

To me, The Legend is the best wooden coaster ever (and this wasn't even with the PTC trains). I suggest that you ride The Raven First. It's shorter in height, and much short in ride time. The Legend throws you around so much, while The Raven is just a speedy ride through the woods. I too think that The Legend does everything that The Raven does, but better. I still have to ride The Beast at night to make my ultimate decision, but I think that the Legend will win out overall.

The time when these two rides really shine is when you ride them at night...this is when they really release their fury.
