Hey, don't forget that I have a copy too, Ron. Nice housewarming gift, btw. :)

Just remember what Rob you're talking about.

Gosh, and to think all this time, *I* was going to Vancouver to smoke Cuban Cigars and watch Hockey games....

I guess I would compare this to tearing down a historical landmark.... except that the General Public may or may not want to consider a roller coaster an historical landmark. If the ride is not protected by some kind of historical landmark agreement, then it's fair game.

It'll be sad to see it go, but given how badly the economy sucks in BC right now, it certainly wouldn't suprise me if they decide they would rather not continue to invest money in a marginally successful park. Especially when that land could be used to build oh, I don't know seven or eight high rise condo complexes to attract more wealthy... I'd better stop right there before I get too cynical... ;)

"Too cynical"? You mean, like, "realistic"? ;)

Jeez, Rob... get over yourself. We all know that Moosh prefers goatees. *Looks in mirror. Sees smooth chin. Remembers August 2002. Grimaces*

Ok. You win. ;)

I live in Vancouver, about a twenty minute drive from Playland. My personal take on the situation: Playland has a serious management problem. The park is an eye-sore and because of this I do not blame the residents who complain about the park. And there are only two rides which I would actually pay to ride (The Revelation and the Coaster, The Revelation I must pay for anyways). The park cares nothing of customer satisfaction, they don't care how ugly their park is and they have no idea what is going on in the ride industry. They bought a giant piece of land in Surrey (maybe 30-40min drive), it was something like 80acres, but they recently resold it to someone else. It was the perfect situation, but they screwed it up. Now that they did that, I think they should just turn Hastings Park into a regular park, move the Coaster to Stanley Park, and have it as the only ride there and people can pay-per-ride. And I hope one day I'll be able to open a major theme park in Vancouver (no, I'm not kidding), and then hopefully all will be right with Vancouver.
nasai: And how do you know that I don't have a goatee?

Actually, I don't... but I did. I shaved it off but one of these days I'll grow it back.

And why I'm mentioning all of this... I have NO idea.

If they really only intended the poll to be for "locals" why not say so? I've seen many a poll that asked for a zip code etc. Sure people can still lie but at least the intention is there.

My impression is that they don't care who votes. I doubt they'll base the entire decision on an internet poll anyway. I really think they're just looking for a general opinion. I have no qualms about giving them mine.

And I have it on good authority that Rob shaved because he has sensitive skin. :) *** Edited 4/30/2004 12:51:19 PM UTC by millrace***

Um, they did. Right there in the first paragraph of the first page. You all were so quick to get to the "vote to spend $100M on the coaster" part that you skipped it.

That's why it's important all Vancouverites to review the four proposed approaches and send in your feedback via the online questionnaire.

Well, millrace... now that NOTHING is sacred ;)

I agree that this poll isn't going to decide anything. The planning board could look at what people are saying and wipe their a**ses with the results. If it was going to be taken completely seriously, I'm sure that a website that blocked out all but Vancouver-area residents would have been launched for the purpose of getting opinions. I can't seem to find anything on the current website about how the results of this poll are going to be used in the next steps of this process.

True. Alternatively, it might not have occurred to them that folks who will come to Vancouver at most a handful of times over the course of their lifetimes would care.

Brian Noble noted that the site says:

That's why it's important all Vancouverites to review the four proposed approaches and send in your feedback via the online questionnaire.

Yes, important for them to vote... but they didn't say that other opinions weren't welcome. Like I said, if that were the case, they would have set it up differently. I believe the site for the poll that discusses the future of the Dreamland site in the U.K. asks for postal codes of voters.

I'm not trying to change anyone's concrete-cast minds that voting in a poll without living in the community that will bear the costs is okay. I'm just pointing out to millrace that they did indeed "say so."

No, he said that they DIDN'T say so. Which they didn't. They made it clear who their target audience was, but didn't express any limitations.

Just pointing out specifics ;)

Suddenly, I'm reminded of the "classroom lawyers" in my courses who try to convince me that their incorrect answer on an exam is really correct.

If I have to separate you two I'm turning this car around RIGHT NOW and there'll be NO DISNEYLAND for you both!

;)

In no way am I saying that I am right or wrong. I'm telling you that there is more than one way to interpret what was said... its all about perception. Its also about the fact that its not really going to matter in the big picture.

And Moosh... we already have our plane tickets to California so there is NOTHING you can do to stop is from going. So there!
